Hello all,
New to this forum... I am looking at used 2003-2004 XC90's. I have been doing alot of research on both the 2.5T and the T6. And, I am getting alot of conflicting answers regarding the T6 in regards to reliability, fuel mileage.
I have not read any posts here regarding towing, so here is my question:
I will be pulling a 3,500 lb. ski boat (total weight w. trailer, fuel & gear) 2-3 weekends a month for 4-5 months a year. 150 miles round trip to the lake of mostly flat backroad driving. Can I easily use the 2.5T for this task, or should I really be looking at the T6?
Also, I am leaning toward a 2003 model (price). Any issues with a 2003 T6? is the 2004 T6 a better choice?
Thank you all for a great forum!
Thanks, Scott K.

Re: 2.5T or T6 - which one is better and more reliable for towing 3,500 lb. boat (tweekme)

I personally would go for the T6.............more torque out of the hole, and the engine will not have to work as hard. I pull about that same amount of weight in snowmobiles and trailer sometimes and I definately wouldn't want to do that with the 2.5t, I also think you will get about the same gas mileage because the T6 will not be working as hard to pull that weight. Plus we get pretty decent gas mileage with the T6 if we are just cruising. (around town it is a different story)
As far as reliability for the 03 T6, we have an 05 T6 with 18,000 miles and no problems so far. . I'm not 100% positive but if the 03 has had campaign 135 done on the tranny (software upgrade) it will be exactly the same. We pull a 4,000 pound plus Cobalt on tandem trailer over our mountain pass with 2005 2.5T. Runs fine at 60 mph, no overheat, etc. Absolutely great & stable pulling and braking.
I would encourage you to research the T6 discussions on this forum for problems with the early years of that model (many issues other than transmission problems). As you may know, that model was discontinued and replaced with the V8, but a litany of problems apparently even led some owners to receive buy-backs and/or exchanges for a new XC90 (non-T6) from Volvo.

I pulled a 12' enclosed aluminum snowmobile trailer with two sleds, maybe 2000lbs + and our old T6 pulled it great. Very little, if any downshifting at a constant 70mph. I was pretty impressed, even though it was a relatively light load.
As far as reliablity, don't go there. Our T6 had more problems than I could even list. It was a 2004 model. Volvo wound up buying it back.

Re: 2.5T or T6 - which one is better and more reliable for towing 3,500 lb. boat (seattlexc90)

Thank you for the reply seattlexc90...
I tried searching for XC90 T6 issues on the entire swedespeed forum, and came up with very little. Do you have a suggestion on what keywords to search on?
I am currently looking into a used 2003 XC90 T6, in nice condition, 46,000 miles, Vers. pkg, 3rd row seat, wood wheel, ext warranty. However, I am getting nowhere with the dealer on the price. They are not going anywhere below $34,000. I see eBay and other sites with sold XC90's showing the same car with and w/o ext. warranty for $24,000-$27,000.
Thanks, Scott K.

Search for:
T6 lemon
buyback
Transmission
but you need to check the "archive" box (these were conversations from a year or so ago) and the "search message" (as opposed to the "title") box
You should find a number of threads about it such as this one:
http://forums.swedespeed.com/z...61652

I've had one MY03 T6 and now I have a MY06 T6. I think it's a great engine. I had a few problems with the MY03. Buy no problems what so ever with my 06. I think you need the extra power from the T6 when you're towing a boat. One other thing, I drove a trip (75km, 75% highway and 25% city driving) with a 2.5T loaner and then the exact same trip with my 06 T6. The fuel consumption was lower with my T6.
