My wife and I are considering buying a 2002 V70. Right now the dealers in Los Angeles are offering 6000 of MSRP for the 2.4 and 7000 off of MSRP for the turbo wagons. We drove the non-turbo and while it handled well it seemed to need some more power. So I would like your opinions on how well a 2002 turbo will hold up compared to the non turbo. We plan on keeping the car for about seven years and to purchase an extended dealer warranty from the dealer. Thanks in advance

Re: 2.4 or 2.4T, how reliabe is the turbo longterm. (gokings55)

Seven years??? You will be more than OK...The turbochargers are very reliable, provided that you change your oil AND filter when required. I have been with Volvo for 8 years, now and I can count [the bad turbos] on the fingers of my one hand (and still have one finger left to pick my nose ). Don't be afraid of the turbo models. You will love it if you get one!
Yannis

ditto on what Yannis said. Also, don't drive hard right off the bat nor shut off the car after. If you have a big hill before your driveway, let the car run for a minute after you have stopped to allow the turbo to cool a bit.
$7k off MSRP? hmm maybe I need to check with our dealer and see what they are offering.

The 2.4T is the best "all round" engine available.
It delivers very good and smooth power.
The turbo itself is very strong and will last.
Normally when a turbo is bad it'll break in the first 15K miles or sooner.
I've only heard of one broken turbo on a new model Volvo in my area and this happened at 9K miles and was replaced under warranty.
If you stop the engine immediately after a demanding ride you will damage the turbo in the long run.
The turbine housing will start to crack.
A replacement turbo costs around $1000 but with normal driving they last as long as the engine.

Thanks for your replies everyone, I think I'm leaning towards the 2.4T now. I can get one nicely loaded for about 31K. Does Vovlo do this big of discounting every september, or is this some type of exception? I heard vovlo sales were really down this year. 7k off of MSRP is really tempting.

The 2.4T is a pretty good all-around choice. Enough power to get you around without being frustrating, but not enough to get you into any trouble. The turbos have a very good power curve also.
As for the reliability of Volvo turbos, I have a 1993 940 Turbo wagon with 150k miles on it, and the turbo is still huffin along trouble-free

He's talking about getting the 2.4T (190hp/210tq). Completely different engine, but still turbo none the less
