Fate brought to me a very interesting car today. I bought it off someone that was broken down with the hopes that my volvo skills and resources were enough to maybe fix the problems. I'm a have some ideas but my expertise is more in the 240 style
Ok so here goes the info on the car. Its a 1999 s70 w/ about 200k on the car. it apparently had an engine swap about 12k ago and a transmission about a year or so ago... maybe I took on a lemon but the price was right and if I can get this thing working it was a steal.
Now for the important details. The car seems to have serious transmission problems, the check engine light pulls a p0740 code for a torque converter malfunction. The overdrive light (the orange up arrow) flashes while the car is running and the SRS light is on. The car seems like its not shifting through the gears properly or at all. When put into any gear including drive revers, low, 3, if you press the gas pretty hard you can get the car to move forward only. Yes revers makes the car go forward... that seems like an important clue. Next when I looked under the car the bottom is covered in transmission fluid and you can feel spatterings of it on the back end of the car. Also when I checked the fluid level it was low to the point that the stick did not read it. I added a few quarts and brought it up to the point where I could read it. Also the residue on the stick before I added any was not really burnt.
I'm leaning towards the pnp switch but any input would be great. Ill be hosing down the underside of the car to track down that pesky leak also... Do you guys think running out of fluid could cause these problems?
Thats all I know for now any help would be greatly appreciated as this car is hopefully a b-day gift for my parents to replace their warhorse 940 wagon with around 400k-500k miles(you can never tell when the odometer stops working I'll be checking back on this post frequently so please help!!!
