Dealer says I need a new transmission (or could have this one rebuilt).
After one minute of running, I receive a Trasmission Urgent Service Need message and the trans goes into the third gear limp mode.
Until then, for the first minute, it shifts normally, either auto or manually, going up and down through all four gears.
My only experience with an auto trans is in my 1965 Plymouth. In that car, if the trans is slipping or going, it slips from start up. Ah things were simpler then!
It is odd to me that the 99 S80 will run through the gears fine, then go into limp mode. To me, this makes the problem seem more electrical than mechanical.
Anyone have any experience like this? I need to make a decision rather quickly, as I need the car.
Thanks,
Paul

Re: 1999 GearTronic PRoblems (PMossberg)

I just gave mine for rebuild on monday to Allstar Transmissions, got a way better price than the dealer. I got a Transmission service required message also. On these cars when that shows up its almost up with its life span.
I know mine is bad because it slips occasionally shifting into 2nd or 3rd gear as if its skipping gear teeth. Also the transmission fluid when wiped off the dipstick leaves this black residue which is actually metal particles.
Especially because you have a T6, your transmission is way more prone to wear. I was lucky to get 140k on mine.

Re: (dcarlson12)

Tell you the truth i didn't find that out, I cant tell you if they're OEM or aftermarket. I would think its aftermarket just with the same specs.
I've never done this before but i doubt they would give detailed information on which gears and things of that sort they replaced.

They should definitely give you a complete list of all components which were damaged and which they replaced. It should be written on your invoice. You should definitely ask for it. When I had my transmission from my 2000 Chevy Astro repaired they took me right into the shop to show the components which were damaged, etc. They were a private shop so we very accommodating....

Transmission problems aren't that widespread on these cars. I've seen many volvo's with geartronic and T6 go over 160k with no tranny problems.

Just wanted to stop back in and say thanks for the advice. The story ended with a new trans, ordered by my local trans guy at a savings of $1,500 over the dealer price. The car is running like new!
Now to deal with the rattle that is coming from the steering column under the dash. Solve that and she'll sound as solid as new too.
