I understand that one can remove the driveshaft without much effect and simply switch to FWD. I suggested this to my mechanic and he seemed horrified. His biggest concern was what happens to the gaping hole left at the transmission once the driveshaft is removed? Any answers would be greatly appreciated.

If you just remove the DS and leave the angle gear there won't be any hole.

Much nicer to have the car AWD though in my opinion.

You also need a new mechanic.
As Will said, just remove the propshaft and it runs just like a FWD with no issues whatsoever
Both my V70Rs have it removed and installed twice a year (seasonal AWD use for snow)
