1998 S90 not blowing at full capacity

881 Views 6 Replies 2 Participants Last post by  macstep1
I need to know what to do. When I turn on the blowers for either the a/c or heater, up to 5, it is the same as 1 or the auto setting. A couple of times last summer, I would hit the top of the dash board and the blowers would blow out cool air full force. But that soon stopped. I have had the AC checked and charged, but I also notice that hot air is always blowing on my feet. What is going on?
and hot.

Welcome to Swedespeed, Mary.

This problem is the classic 90/960 AC bellows failure - very $$$ to fix for both parts and labor.

If you decide to get it fixed go with a full repair of the under-dash HVAC controls, mechanisms, vacuum lines, etc.

The labor will be huge but you will pay it only one time.

If you go to a Volvo dealer for this repair you may wish to ask Obama for an early/large stimulus check.

An independent Volvo repair shop will struggle with this fix unless they have done many previously.

Same for your friendly garage down the street.

Does your car have other problems with accessories?

I was hoping you were going to tell me that I need to replace the blower motor or the resistor assembly or that the heater control valve was worn. At one time the vents were blowing out black foam specks. Does this have something to do with the problem I am experiencing?

What do you mean when you say other accessories?

"Black foam specks", yes, indeed - remnants of the deteriorated seals for the HVAC vents and "doors".

"Other accessories"? Once the dash and center console and front seats and front carpet and side kick panels are out this is the time to fix the items associated with AC, heat, defrost, ventilation, etc. The system uses vacuum, electricity and spring tension to operate properly and these items are a well-known 90/960 high-incidence repair area.
