That was such a lame eBay ad. He said all the lamest things you can ever imagine. And you know what's the saddest part of all these? There are actually dumb ass bidding on this car. Not sure if they thought it was a good deal, or they are falling for those false claims. To tell you the truth, this car is as ghetto as it can get, and probably good enough to be listed on the member's gallery on this other site where all the r1ced volvo owners hang out. God, I'm bitter tonite.
Anyone believes anything he claims deserves this 'thingy.' I actually was bored enough to went on AIM and had a little bit of fun with him. You gotta admit, though..with all these things he has claimed, he does deserve Kai's bashing.

Otherwise, how could the plant tell you it's assembled in Canada and the first digit is still the same as those assembled in Sweden or Italy or anywhere else? If the VIN started with 2, I think that would tell you it's a Canadian car, which may or may not be assembled in Canada. I've NEVER seen a VIN for a 200, 700, or 900 series car that didn't start with "YV1", so I think the first digit is the country of origin, but the example you gave above suggests that maybe this isn't always the case, or the standard was changed. I just don't know for sure.

The first three alphanumeric characters are a manufacturer code. All Volvos from about the '70s onward start with YV1. The standard was revised slightly in the early 80's, and they've been through the alphabet more than once with regard to the year code.
I think the confusion stems from the fact that this is an American standard - Colin, you're in Australia, right? You won't necessarily see the same coding structure there, although some other markets (Canada for instance) do use the same standard.
