1998 AWD Problems

This is a quote form the local Volvo Dealer ""The unit I am taking about is called the Viscous coupler and sets on front of rear differential, it is what is leaking
and there is no repair except to replace.""
I want to disconnect the AWD and just make it front whell drive-if I do that will I still need the parts Volvo is talking about (Viscous coupler and sets on front of rear differential, it is what is leaking)
Seems to me if I am not using the AWD the Viscous coupler would not needed.
