I'm new to this list, so if this question has been covered, please refer me to the previous area.

I recently purchased a 1997 850 with about 90,000 miles on it. It runs great with one exception--when the car starrts, it revs to about 1600 rpm for about 5 seconds, then falls to 1,000 rpm. It idles at about 1,000 thereafter.

It seems like the initial rev would be hard on an engine just developing oil pressure. Also 1,000 rpm seems like a high idle speed.

How is the idle speed set on this model short of replacing the idle air controller? The set-screw and the shaft in the linkage do not seem to be constraining the movement of the throttle linkage.

Much thanks in avance.

Re: 1997 850 idle (1sciroccofahrer)

I know it has been a while since I had my '97 855 but I thought idle was below 1000, closer to 750 to 800?

People on other forums are posting that the speedo on many 850's aren't very accurate, and claim that to really see true speedo a computer or laptop hook-up is necessary with appropriate software. Just a thought. My previous 850 sat right at 800. My S70 sits at about 950.

950-1000, whatever. these TACHS, (NOT speedos) aren't that accurate and could easily be off by 100, even 200 rpms

Re: 1997 850 idle (tom850)

Thanks much for all the helpful replies. I thought about the tach accuracy but my old Sears dwell meter/tach has settings for 4-6-8, no 5 cylinder! I'll look into updated equipment.

The first tach in my 850 was fine at an idle, off by a 1000rpm @ redline.

for the past three years that i've owned my 94 855t, even in the dead of cold winters, when i start the car, it'd get to 900rpm or whatever and just sit there. but this past week, it started to go up to 1600 for a second before falling down to 900. never seen that happen before. any idea what's going on? i know it's normal for this to happen but given the past three years, this is abnormal.
