I'm buying a 1995 850. According to the SS info site, this has a variant 3 engine, (see blow).

1995 - Sedan/Wagon - Base/GLT/Turbo/T-5R
854/855 Base - Engine Variant 1
854/855 GLT - Engine Variant 1
854/855 Turbo - Engine Variant 3
854/855 T-5R - Engine Variant 4

Engine Information:
There are four different engine variants used in the 800 series:
Variant 1: 2.4L inline 5 168 SAE net hp, 162 SAE net ft./lbs. - 5-speed manual/4-speed
Variant 2: 2.4L inline 5 turbo, 190 SAE net hp, 197 SAE net ft./lbs. - 4-speed automatic
Variant 3: 2.3L inline 5 turbo, 222 SAE net hp, 221 SAE net ft./lbs. - 4-speed automatic
Variant 4: 2.3L inline 5 turbo, 240 SAE net hp, 221 SAE net ft./lbs. - 4-speed automatic

I checked CarFax data for the car and the CarFax data says "2.4L L5 FI DOHC"

Anybody know what I may have under the hood?

Re: 1995 engine specs (guidowitz)

Thanks. I'll look for the engine code. What do the codes mean?

I've been told that there were only 3 different engines for the North American market:

"There is a base non turbo engine, the LPT turbo engine and the the R engine, period"

What does LPT mean?

What does GLT mean?

there is no light pressured turbo (LPT) in 1995. if u have a 2.4L in 1995, it is a non-turbo n/a version.

glt, who knows.. maybe grand luxury touring.. could be wrong, but i don't believe volvo ever came clear on that.

I just searched around one of the Swedish car sites and someone had asked what "GLT" means. There was some speculation, but the best answer was exactly what Steve said above - "grand luxury touring." Then many more plays on the acronym occurred, my favorite being "gammal luddig traktor" which means old fuzzy tractor...

I consider an 850 turbo to be in the middle, perhaps I'm wrong but yes, the LPT came out in 1997.
1995 you have a base non turbo at 160 hp, an 850 turbo at 220 hp and the T5R at 236 I believe

Thanks much to all that have responed! Since my 1995 850 has a turbo, then it must be the variant 3 with 220 hp.

What is the VIN code for the engine?

Should be something like 53, 55, 57, 58.

Where can I find the engine code data?
