Just bought a used 1995 850 that didn't come with any remotes. The previous owner said it never had them, but I noticed that all of the keys he gave me were copies, so he may have lost them. I have 2 questions:
- How do I know if the car had remote locking?

- How do I program the new remotes?

Any help will be appreciated.

If you still have the owners manual it should tell you how to program the remotes (if possible with that year model). On my 1997, you turn the ignition on/off 5 times, leaving it on the 5th time. You then press a button on the remote. The LED on the dash stops blinking and glows steady for a few seconds to indicate acceptance of the remote.

Incidentally, I just bought a spare remote from eBay and it won't work with my car. (Not the sellers fault; my local dealer gave me the wrong p/n!) Call your local dealer and ask what the part number would be for a remote. They will probably need your VIN, so be prepared. Send me an email with the results, and if it matches what I've got I'll make you a heckuva deal!

The remote for a 1995 Volvo 850 should look like this, which was the first generation Volvo remote:

The second generation Volvo remote looked like this:

The procedure to program the remote for the 1995 should be the same as the 1997, but the remotes are different as noted above. As mentioned, they can be found on Ebay, usually for not very much.

Thanks for the info. I have just found out that all 1995 850s at least have the remote locking while some also have the alarm (I hope this is true). I will try to get my hands on one and try it out. Thanks again!

Can you get keyless entry w/o the alarm? You can tell if your car has an alarm by if there is a little red led at the center of the dash pretty close to where the windshield meets the dash. If there is a little holder with a light on it, then you do for sure. If you don't, then i'm not sure. best of luck.

i do not thave the red led light on my dash, but my owner's manual says that some models have remote entry and others also have an alarm. there is no mention of exactly which models have it or how to program a new remote. however, my source of info (a volvo tech) assures me that all '95 850s have at least the remote entry and others (GLTs?) have the alarm. Can anybody confirm this?

Now that I'm at home I can verify the part number of my (useless to me) remote:

9148646

It is a "first generation" as noted above. If anyone is interested in this remote, drop me an email. It is used, with some scratches, but has a new battery. I cannot verify that it works, since it is incompatible with my car.
