Do the rear main seals wear out or is there a crank case pressure issue that can be fixed?

I was in a shop with an 850 with a blown rear seal. Ugly mess as the oil
streamed out and soaked everything downstream of the engine.
Appararently they were driving on the highway and didn't
stop in time to prevent engine damage. They had about 180K miles.

I replaced my 1993 850 rear seal when I had to replace
the flywheel at ~180K miles (did all the clutch parts since
it was easiest at that point).
