Hello all,

just looking for advice/info. i am looking at a 1993 Volvo 850 GLT from a dealer. the car has 112933 miles on it, he is asking $3,900 for it. the transmission is automatic. i have never owned a Volvo before, anything to be on the lookout for on this particular model ?

thanks

Take it to an independant volvo guy if you're seriously interested. Don't you want a turbo?
This' what that car's got under the hood:
1993: 850 GLT, 2.4L normally aspirated engine (168 hp, 162 lb-ft) BOOOO.... Save the money, score a turbo model... you'll be much happier that you did..

thanks for the info. is the 'non-turbo' engine that bad of a dog??? ... i am a 45 yr old dad...i am not going to be racing too many people in this thing.

thanks.

No, it's not that bad of a dog.. For what you'll prolly be doing with it you'll be fine. But, it's nice to know you can race if you should so choose...

Personally, I would search for a newer 850... maybe a 96 - 97... '93 was the first year of the 850. The S70's are very nice too...

For what it's worth, I drove my sister's '93 850GLT (with ~117k on it) for a while just before it died (unbeknownst to me, she failed to have the timing belt replaced). It was a pretty nice car. Had a reasonable amount of power, though a turbo model does pick it up a bit -- I was also driving my '99 V70XC at the time which is more-or-less an 850 wagon with an lpt. Honestly, the biggest annoyance with the '93 850 was the window/door controls being located just under the center armrest

. I believe this was remedied in later models. All in all, it was a pretty good car. Sad to see it go.

If you can spring for a little more $$ try and stay away from '93s
First year car and generally trouble
Significant changes for '94 but still, if you can find a '95-'97, many more changes and a MUCH better car
Whatever early car you buy make sure you have it checked out.
Even if it's a decent car it could still be requiring maintenance which for certain items can be mucho dinero
