Hi, i'm new here so please let me know if I'm doing this forum stuff wrong.

I'm having some trouble with a persistent check engine light on my 1989 244 DL, the OBD system gives a 2-1-2 code, which the books say bluntly is "oxygen sensor". I have tried replacing the sensor to no avail, and I am not sure what else could possibly be at fault.

The light only comes on if I allow the car to idle, when driven on the highway it will go indefinitely and the light never comes on, I took it on a 1500 mile road trip and had no problems. As soon as the car idles for five minutes, though, the check engine light comes right back on with the same 2-1-2 code, it is a very repeatable problem but I cannot seem to pin down the cause. The car runs fantastic, there don't seem to be any problems and I have absolutely no complaints with the way the car drives. Any insight would be very much appreciated, as I am afraid the car won't pass smog if the light comes on mid test.
