Hello all,<p>I recently purchase an '88 740 for my younger brother to drive to school, after about 3 mths he complained of the clutch hard to engage in 1st and 2nd. Last week he had to have it towed because the clutch pedal went to the floor.<p>So I tore into it last weekend, and when I removed the trans (M47) and clutch plate, I found the friction disc in pieces. Hmmmm, that could be why he has a problem?<p>Does anyone know the torque specs for the clutch pressure plate, and also the tranny. I can torque them up tight, but I would rather go by the book (by the way which I cant seem to find locally). I have searched and heard 18ft/lbs for the pressure plate...is that correct? <IMG NAME="icon" SRC="http://www.vwvortex.com/vwbb/confused.gif" BORDER="0"> <p>cheers, Aaron

I just got thrue looking thrue all my books and can not find eneything for clutch pressure plate bolt torque.<p>18-20 foot pounds is good. Thats what 90% of cars call for. I did my 1988 245DL clutch 2 mounths agow. I put the bolts at 20 pounds. It has the same engine and trans as your 740.<p> Whay clutch do you plan on useing????? Try to get a Scach. I have never had a problume wiyh them. 18 ft/lbs is what All Data calls for so +1 for backfire's 18-20!!
