I came across the opportunity to acquire a 1984 240 DL with about 116,000 miles that has been sitting in a garage for several years unused. The details on the condition of the car are still sketchy, but the current owner thinks it needs a new battery and probably tires. The body and interior are in good shape.
I am tempted to take ownership at a favorable price, but would like to get some advice on what big ticket repairs I am likely looking at. I don't have any experience with the older Volvos so have no idea about the availabliity of replacement parts.
Your suggestions, tips are welcome.
Rod

Re: 1984 240 DL: Good deal or expensive hobby? (dakotarod)

Welcome to Swedespeed, Rod.
All replacement parts are available at reasonable prices except the engine wiring harness which will most likely be rotten on your subject car.
Let's say you get the car for $500 delivered by trailer to your driveway.
Put it on craigslist as-is for $750.
George Dill

"expensive hobby" because if you are an enthusiast, you are never really "done" with any project, and you don't settle for 'just getting it running'.
FWIW, I know people that spend a whole lot of $$$ on stamps, coins, etc that just sit in dusty cases. At least my "hobby" is much more 'interactive'!

That is a great car and it is still a baby with only 116K on it. Just clean it up and get it running and you will have one great little car.
