I had a 75 240 once and it couldn't get out of it's own way.
Put the whole drivetrain from a 79 240 in it. The engine and trans bolted straight up. The only holes I had to drill was for the 79's windshild washer tank. The elctricial conections to the engine wheren't too hard and neither were the fuel lines. If nothing else put the prepump in the tank or risk vaporlock. mine did this before the engine swap and that fixed the problem.
