Re: 17,614 XC70, V70, and S80 models recalled for faulty cooling fan! ([email protected])

Thanks for the notification.
I'm not sure if I'm affected since I'm outside of the US but I'm going to start monitoring my 2009 V70. I haven't had any cooling problems so far, thankfully. The aircon is freezing cold (essential for the climate in my country) and no overheating has occured even when driving around in 35 deg C ambient temperatures...
It's even harder to notice anything amiss with the coolant temperature since the models in question don't have a temperature gauge in the instrument panel...

Re: (rovermark)

I have a March '08 xc70 and my fan failed after about 5000kms (at a guess about 3000 miles) on the clock. I found out when I received a message detailing words to the effect, "slow speed engine overheating". At the time it was a hot day and I was in heavy traffic and not doing anything like high speed. Without a temperature gauge I kind of think that this will be the scenario for most owners to discover they have a faulty fan as in hot day, heavy traffic and overheating.
I was lucky though as I had the day before returned from a country trip having done about 1,000kms.
In fact a postscript to this occurred this week when having travelled 450 into the north/west to see a farmer. As it turns out he is a complete car nut having two harleys, two mercs about 5 dirtbikes and a E type jag he has all but finished restoring and ready for re-spray. He takes a look at my 70 and asks to have a look at the D5 diesel. He takes one look under the bonnet and tells me that a clip that holds the thing that looks like a radiator at the front of the engine is BROKEN. He then takes a hold of one side of the radiator looking thing and waggles it. Kindly he got a couple of those clik-lok nylon ties and secured it.
Motto to the story is that if you are one of the 17000 or so vehicles subject of the fan recall then check your clips after they have done the job.
Cheers
Hatdriver

Re: (BarentsBlueV50)

I've got it fixed during my 15K service a couple of weeks ago. I do not think that the letter was sent out. The fixes would/could be done in conjunction with other services and repairs.

Don't see why they take their time mailing out the notices. I'd think they could limit their liability in the event of failure at least, if they've been diligent and mailed them out right away but the customer's not done anything about it.

I haven't got anything yet... though I'm far away from where you guys are.
I'm planning for a service next week for my 2009 V70 2.5T... will ask about it during that time. Now I got to go and book the service...

Re: 17,614 XC70, V70, and S80 models recalled for faulty cooling fan! ([email protected])

I just started to notice poor air conditioner performance on my 2009 S80 when stopped in traffic on a hot day. Air coming out of the vents is barely cool until the vehicle starts moving again and air flows through the radiator. As long as the vehicle is moving, the A/C blows ice-cold air. Does anyone else have this problem? I have a feeling my car is affected by the recall for the fan control module. I'm trying to get through to the Volvo Customer Care Center right now to see if my car is on the recall list. I'd also like to meet the moron Volvo design engineer who decided to do without a temperature gauge on this redesign. No use - I don't speak Swedish. Guess I'll have to go aftermarket, but I can't think of a gauge placement that won't look tacked on. And no, I won't put a gauge in place of my analog clock.

Re: 17,614 XC70, V70, and S80 models recalled for faulty cooling fan! (MAC1LSR)

I just got ahold of the Volvo Customer Care Center. They said my VIN is included in the fan recall. I also asked if we can view these recalls on the Volvocars.com/us website, and they showed me where to find it on the website. I couldn't find it on my own. No wonder, recall info is buried about 8 levels down into the website. Funny thing though: when I entered my VIN into the website, if said that there are no recalls for my car. I'll believe the person I spoke with rather than the website.
Made an appointment with my Volvo dealer. Loaner car won't be available for 1 week, so they will work on my S80 on July 21st for the fan recall and check my A/C performance. I'm not driving my S80 again until I bring it in to the Service Department. Fortunately, I have another car with a working cooling fan.

Re: 17,614 XC70, V70, and S80 models recalled for faulty cooling fan! (MAC1LSR)

Hi,
My memory is that the air-cond was not doing its job properly on the day my fan died. Though as i said i was in heavy traffic and had more on my mind when i got the message as I altered my destination and started to head home slowly.
The other thing is that I noticed a few posts above that Volvo details that you will get the message detailed a few posts post back. Thats DEFINITELY not the message I got, it was more along the lines of slow down the engines overheating.
Mac, if I was you though i might steer clear of heavy traffic & hot days until the fan is replaced.
What about me though. They didnt have a spare fan in Australia when mine failed (it happened about May, 08 when the model was real new) so they took a fan of a 70 in the showroom and put it on my car. So I will have to check with my dealer if the showroom car was subject of the recall now!!!
Cheers
Hatdriver

Hatdriver, you're right about avoiding a traffic jam on my way to the dealer. I can only hope it won't be a real hot day.

Quote, originally posted by robreed55 »

Yeah, I wish there was a temp gauge as well.

MAC1LSR and robreed55, I share the same thoughts. The temperature gauge has helped me spot cooling problems well before they even emerged on some of my previous cars. You can see the temperature needle rising above normal levels.
But for the V70/XC70/S80, we won't know anything since the message only appears when the temperature exceeds tolerable limits.
So far so good for me here... aircon still freezing me into a block of ice. But I'm still hoping that if my car is affected, it'll hold up till my service next week. I need my car everyday...

Re: 17,614 XC70, V70, and S80 models recalled for faulty cooling fan! (frontwheeldriven)

I'm seriously thinking about adding an aftermarket coolant temp gauge to my S80. I just need to know how and where to put a temp sensor on the engine, and route the sensor-to-gauge wire through the firewall. I've already looked for an opening through the firewall when I was trying to mount my external GPS antenna, and I couldn't see ANY accessible opening. Time to do more searching on the Internet. There is an independent Volvo repair shop in my area, but I don't know if he could help me on this. Maybe I'll pay him a visit.
I'd like to get a gauge on before next weeks appointment with my dealer, so I could compare before and after (the fan recall fix) coolant temperatures, but it probably won't happen.

Might be worth having a look there.
Too bad someone's not come up with a way to grab the data and display it in the trip computer screen! That would be cool. I'd much rather have that as a choice than the silly instantaneous fuel mileage, for example!

If they are going to take out the temp gauge, at least provide a wireless service where I can use a wireless device like my iphone to read the current engine temperature. How many more years will I have to wait until my car has wireless instrumentation capability?
I also called VCNA. They said my 2008 Volvo V70 was NOT affected by this recall. I am not so sure I believe them.
Re: 17,614 XC70, V70, and S80 models recalled for faulty cooling fan! (Lotus99)

I did some searching on the Internet, and decided that my best bet to locate a sending unit for an aftermarket temp gauge would be to drill and tap the thermostat housing. Well, I just looked at the thermostat housing on my S80 T6, and it is PLASTIC! Can drill it, but it's not thick and strong enough to hold threads. There is molded in to the housing already an OEM sending unit. If only I knew how to use that signal to work with an aftermarket gauge. I feel like I'm at a dead end now. There must be a way, though.

Does anyone know if the engine temp is outputted in real time over the OBD-II port on the V70/XC70/S80?
If it is, then an OBD to WiFi device like the "Kiwi Wifi" by PLX Devices ( http://www.plxkiwi.com/kiwiwifi/buynow.html ) in combination with the "Rev" iPhone app ( http://devtoaster.com/products/rev/index.html ) might be a decent solution.
Hmm, at about $200 for the two, I'm tempted to give it a try.
