Hello all,

Considering a set of dedicated snows for my R-Design. Found some 17” tires, but curious if anyone can say 100% conclusively that they’ve tried 17s on the R-Design? Have read different things, but hopefully someone can confirm for sure.

I’m new to the P3 cars, and assume the R-Design has larger brakes. Not positive though...

Thanks!

Yes. Ran 17" pegs on my car last winter.

Almost any Volvo wheel in the last 20 years has been a 5x108 pattern. You just need to check the bore, as some of them are either bigger or smaller. Smaller and they need bored, larger, and you need hub rungs to run them. Your signature has a 2013 XC60 which would have a 63.4 MM bore. What wheels are you considering? They may be a little puny on your car, which came with 18s standard and went up to 20.

Simple math will help get the same diameter so ABS and speedo aren't all confused:

For example - 235/65/17 is a 235 MM width. The 65 is the aspect ratio or 65% of that width off the wheel. 152.75 MM on both sides of the wheel (x2). 17" wheel is 431,8 MM.
431.88 + 152.75 + 152.75 = 737.38 MM

255/45/20 is a 255 MM width. 45% of 255 is 114.75 x 2 = 229.5 & a 20" wheel is 508 MM.
508 + 229.5 = 737.5 MM

A 17" wheel with the right size tire will be much smoother but less responsive and sporty...

Thanks guys.

Emgrock - Is it safe to assume that the wagon uses the same brakes as the XC?

ZZZZZZZ - Thanks for the info. I know the lug pattern and bore won’t be an issue, mostly curious if they’ll clear the brakes. I’d imagine the R-Design uses larger brakes, but not positive. Regarding specific wheels, probably looking at the Balder from the S60, or possible the Neptune from the P2 XC90 (already have these, would just need to pick up hub rings). Figure they shouldn’t look any more puny than they do on the XC90, since our ‘06 uses 17s and they look fitting. Regarding the softer ride, that’s actually welcomed lol. Always worried about bending the 20” Cratus on PA roads :(.

And yeah, looks like a 235/65R17 ends up roughly the same overall diameter as the 255/45R20.

Thanks!

That's a good question. Im not sure if the XC60 RDesign has an upgraded caliper or not. The V60 has 336mm rotors, I believe the XC60 non RDesign is 316mm. The calipers on the XC are twin pot vs the V60rd single pot.
