I just testdrove a '94 850 wagon (93K mi) and was really disappointed how sluggish this thing was. Okay, we were three in the car, but I thought 168 hp would feel stronger. Even in the sports setting. Also quite noisy that engine. Is that normal or should I have that engine checked before I write a check?
I also tried an 850 turbo, that was better but also not impressive. My now deceased Corolla felt a lot more sporty with its 115 hp (of course it also weighs less, but the hp to weight ratio is roughly the same).

Any comments welcome!

An 850 with 168HP does not have turbo lag since it, simply, is not turbocharged and also it does not "driven by wire"...that throttle did not appear until MY1999.

We have a 1996 850 non-turbo. While power and responsiveness can be a subjective thing depending on what you are used to, I'd say our 96 sedan if very responsive. It doesn't have the initial turbo lag of my friend's '96 turbo wagon,he gets the rush of power as soon as the turbo spins up. In my non-turbo the variable valve timing seems to keep the power coming at all rpms, just not as much as the turbo models. There is a definite pull during acceleration.

After the 60K service when the car got new plugs, rotor, cap, and wires the responsiveness was much more noticeable. And I run Mobil One which this motor seems to love, it definitely runs quieter, smoother, and revs more quickly on the synthetic.

My .02 worth.

It was an automatic. I tried both, Economy and Sport. It was slightly better in Sport (also significantly louder). I have since driven another 850 that felt (what I consider) "normal". I will have the car thoroughly checked (including compression) before I fork over any money.

I will let you know about the result.
