So, I've now had car since March 11, 2006. Picked it up the day after my 30th birthday. I love driving it, I love looking at it, I love the way people look at it, and I love how many people ask me if it's the "new Audi A4". Great car, loaded with personality.
Now, we've had Volvo's in my family since 1988. Dad has owned nothing but, since we got creamed by a Kenworth in our then new 745 turbo. I know the "quirks" of owning a Swedish car, and this will not be my last, but I'm starting to get a little irritated by my V50.
To date, here's the problems I have had:
-Defogger didn't work from day 1. Took 3 trips to the dealer to get it right.
-Overhead panel rattles worse than a 5 year old Kia. Been in 4 times, going in again on Friday
-Passenger rear seatbelt was replaced under warranty. Now the passenger front one is doing the same thing. If the driver front belt breaks, I will be pissed. Volvo can come and pick the car up on a flat bed when that happens.
-Single piece of leather on the passenger seat is seemingly made from tissue paper. Seat cover is being replaced on Friday.
- Tail pipes have never lined up properly. Been "fixed" once, still crooked.
- Windshield washer fluid was leaking through the rear dome light. Fixed under warranty, but only AFTER it poured all over my cargo.
- Headliner has a huge blue stain on it now from the washer fluid, and it hangs down on the left side. Looking at it on Friday.
- OE Michelin tires are garbage. Looking forward to replacing them.
- Has a funny groan at low speeds, while turning. SOunds like a brake groan, but never been replicated at dealer.
That covers most of the smaller issues, here's the biggest ones.
CLUTCH! It slips, badly. I do not drive the car terribly hard, and don't drag race it. About 8 or 9 times since ownership, I have needed to launch hard. Once to get around a slow moving sweeper truck, once coming up a steep hill with a heavy load in the car, etc. Every time I need the clutch to do it's job, it fails. It slips, stinks, smokes, etc. Dealer has tried to replicate, but can't, so I still have a bullcrap clutch. If this car was a client's car in my shop, I would have sold him a clutch by now. I've owned 45 cars in 15 years, have 6 in the fleet now, and have never owned an automatic. I KNOW it is not my driving style. The top of the range Volvo, should be able to withstand some occasional hard use of it's clutch. It is going in on Friday for the 4th time. If they can't or won't fix it, I will be going to Volvo Canada on this one. To me, this is a safety issue, not to mention it's embarassing.
Newest Issues:
- Last week, after a high speed freeway run, I smelled gear oil burning under the car. Now I smell it every time I get off the freeway. Angle gear?
- This morning, for the first time, I had SSS. Started the car, it idled at 600rpm, ran like poop, and then stalled. Been fine since. Mine is an 06, I thought this was on 05 problem?
- Last weekend, I parked the car for 3 hours, and locked it up. When I came out, the driver's side window was down!!!
- Last month, my driver's side door locks would not work. Dealer couldn't replicate, and no codes present.
So, that seems like a LOT of problems, especially for a $50k car, no? I restore old cars for a living, and have always driven old cars as well. That list is shorter than the list of problems on my old 533i, but that car was 20 years old. Anyone else have this many issues with their S40/V50?
It's going in on Friday, and I have asked for a car other than a V50 as a loaner. I've requested a V70. I'm curious to see the difference. I am also going to refuse to pick the car up, until everything is up to snuff. Would I be wrong to demand the clutch be replaced? I mean, I was a dealer tech for VW/Audi for 3 years, so I can understand that their hands may be tied in some ways, but how many times does a customer have to complain before they believe him?
Al
Re: 15k km report on my 06 AWD V50 6 speed. (Al Canuck)

I've been a bit luckier than You. Two comments however. My '06 had SSS last summer and again this summer. I had the reflash about 2 months ago and SSS is GONE! The situation with Your driver's door window intrigues Me however. About ten days ago I parked my car at a friends house to go on vacation for a week. The first night at the resort the other couple's 20 yr old son calls and My S40's driver's door window is down, it's raining very hard, and the alarm system is whailing since the Son tried to open the driver's door to close the window. He and a friend removed both battery cables and the alarm still worked.... but He reattached the cables and the alarm stopped. The car has been operating normally since then.
I could have sworn I closed the windows & locked the car before We left on vacation..... But it was late, I was tired, it was dark, and I'd had a couple

My drivers side doors have been having the same locking problem and the power windows wouldn't work either. I'm taking it in Thursday to get looked at. Of course, it hasn't been happening since I made my appointment last week. I did notice something weird though: when the power locks or windows weren't working, they worked with the door open. Odd.

sorry you're having so many problems I bought my s40 last Nov. I have had only one one problem, a loud screeching noise coming from the right rotor fixed after a quick visit to the dealer otherwise it's been trouble free( knock on wood)

Re: 15k km report on my 06 AWD V50 6 speed. (Al Canuck)

We picked up our '06 V50 T5 AWD 6 sp. in early June but really only have three weeks (two in Europe and one here) and 2K miles on it. Our only issue is the "barking dogs" and our dealer is checking that tomorrow. Otherwise its been really solid (and really fun!). Cruised all day @ 85mph through Europe -- average speed on the computer was about 55 mph when we shipped it home. And that was after driving around the English countryside, waiting for ferries, and driving in Brussels, Bruge, and several other urban diversions.

Re: 15k km report on my 06 AWD V50 6 speed. (jackf)

Well, I dropped the car off tonight, so hopefully we'll see some good things happen tomorrow. Dealership is sympathetic to all the problems. Even the shop foreman has taken a personal interest in it, particularly the clutch problem.
They gave me a 2006 V70 2.5T AWD as a loaner. Nice car. I'd not driven one before, so this is a nice change. Definitely bigger than my V50, rides floatier, not as engaging, but I bet it would be an amazing road trip car. I love the size, just wish it had more power, manual gearbox, and a stiffer suspension. Oh wait, then it would be an R. Also missing the xenon's on my V50 tonight.
Al

So, picking the car up tomorrow(Saturday), with most of the issues addressed.
1) Rattle has apparently been traced to a sunvisor clip. Fixed.
2) Seatbelt ordered in. Kinda bummed that 2 belts have gone bad in this thing.
3) Seat cover replaced.
4) Tail pipes still crooked, but I forgot to mention it this time.
5) Headliner cleaned, and reinstalled.
6) Groan still there. Forgot to mention it this time.
7) Clutch - Ordered new clutch in, but still undecided if they're going to replace it or not. Decision will be made when I bring it back for seat belt.
8) Gear oil. No leaks present.
9) SSS - Reflashed ECU. Time will tell.
10) Window - Showed code saying it had been binding. Cleaned and lubed mechanisms. Doesn't explain why it was open, but whatever.
11) Door locks - Have worked fine since initial report.
Al

Re: 15k km report on my 06 AWD V50 6 speed. (Al Canuck)

Ya, I've had some problems with my car, some when brand new, it really sucks, but overall I'm very happy with my car(I've had it for a year now).
About a month after I got it, I thought it had SSS, but it was worse. I started it, the idle was kind of stumbling, and the car died. I started it again, seemed okay, backed out of my driveway, put it in gear, and right when I tried to accelerate it stumbled and died. It would not start after that, the starter would just go and go but nothing would happen. My dealer had the car for a week trying to figure out the problem, and it turned out it was the fuel control module(or something like that).
My tailpipes are crooked too, and the dealer tried to fix it but couldn't do anything. The middle section of the rear seats has the "tissue paper" leather, but I've never mentioned it. There's a rattling sound from underneath the car after starting, the dealer said there was a loose heat shield on the catalytic converter, but that didn't fix it. The passenger seat makes creaking and popping sounds when I turn and someones in it, the dealer "aligned and lubricated" it, didn't fix it. The car idles very lumpy, mentioned it to the dealer but they said it "idled to factory specs". The steering wheel sometimes shudders and feels loose when turning and hitting a bump(vibrates quite a bit over bad roads too). Both of the rear door pulls feel VERY cheap and brittle, and there's quite a bit of wind noise from the right side of the car on the freeway.
Those are all the problems I have or have had with my S40. Some of them aren't bad, but they can get annoying sometimes, and most I've learned to live with since my dealer can never seem to correct the problems. However I still really do enjoy my car, and love the power, solidity, styling, and overall build quality....

Apparently it's not an uncommmon problem...a service bulletin has just come out within the last couple days that addresses this. Apparently, some electrical connections (I think within the engine bay) have to be checked and re-lubed. I've only had the car back for a few hours, so hopefully it holds up. I also had my remote window down function turned on, after the dealer I bought the car from told me it wasn't possible

Re: 15k km report on my 06 AWD V50 6 speed. (Seven)

Yeah, the door lock lube was done when I initially had the problem. Been fine for several weeks now.
So, I picked the car up yesterday, bit not easily. Drove all the way to the dealer(Langley to Vancouver for the locals), and attempted to get my car. Seems the dealership lost my key! I hung around for a while, but it didn't turn up, so I kept their V70, and came all the way home to get the spare. Drove all the way back, got my car, but key is still MIA.
I took my car, and came home again. Walking around it in the garage, I noticed long, fine scratch on top of the fender that was not there when I dropped it off, and also a paint chip right behind the scratch. Not impressed.
As for the repairs, there is a sunvisor clip on the way, seatbelt on the way, clutch kit on the way. Has anyone else noticed that there seems to be a lack of available parts for our cars on hand in the dealerships?
Al

Yes, they didn't have an auto-dimming mirror in stock for my Volvo. They also didn't have the lever that controls the A/C vent's direction in stock, but that's a bit more understandable. It seems they just have bulbs and oil.

if I had that many problems with my car I would give it back. Your time is too valuable too spend on such issues. A little problem here or there I can understand but this is just too much. Good luck to you.

Re: (jakemtl)

Jake, I did think about forcing the issue, and attempting to get Volvo to buy it back. Problem is, then what? Then I need to buy something else. I've thought about what I would buy, and it's the same list I had when I bought the V50. I still prefer the V50 to anything else in this segment. Only other car I would seriously consider would be a 325xit, and I'm SURE I would have the same level of problems that I do with my V50.
Al

Re: (Al Canuck)

Update.....

The car is back in the dealership AGAIN. This time it stalled on me while sitting at a stop sign. Plus, the centre channel speaker is rattling like hell, none of the parts on order have shown up yet, it's developed a misfire at idle, and the dealer is ready to hand it back to me, with nothing actually fixed. I said no. I'm not picking it up until the parts on order are replaced, and some of the new issues are solved. I've had it.
I'm leaving the office in about 5 minutes, to go and drive another car. This one is a 2005 S60 T5 6 speed. It's white, loaded, and brand new leftover 05. It's been sitting on the same lot I bought my V50 from, since 2005, so I am hoping the same sales guy can work with me on it, and get me into this car. I love my V50, but I can't deal with the issues anymore.
Al
