Re: 155 ETM Re-programming (jemc70)

Found out today that this is DEFINITELY and ETM AND an ECU reflash.
(99's thru 01's naturally)
It WILL wipe out previous programming.
It is also a federal recall so unless you make it VERY clear that your ECU is reflashed it WILL be done automatically if taken to a Volvo dealer

Re: 155 ETM Re-programming not a federal recall

The 155 ECU/ETM upgrade flash is not a federal recall at all. NHTSA is only performing an Engineering investigation at this time into a potential defect of Volvo's Electronic Throttle Module.
Volvo has voluntarily extended the warranty of the component and is offering new control software of the Electronic Throttle System (ETS) to its customers.
This is why it is important to file complaints with NHTSA when your ETM fails or if you have problems with the new software. It is only this action that will escalate the situation to the point where a true federal recall can or will occur.
Sorry JRL.
I have it on good authority that it is not a recall at all. It is only a federal investigation into a possible defect.
They wouldn't call your car in and overwrite your software if it were "only a federal investigation into a possible defect." Maybe not a "recall" in the traditional sense, but it doesn't have to be. The federal investigation is an on-going thing, at this point. The extended warranty and ETM reprogramming are results of that.
Besides, isn't Volvo calling it an "service program" or "warranty extension" or something like that?
This stopped being simply an investigation months ago.
Re: 155 ETM Re-programming not a federal recall (Dueling70s)

I spoke with NHTSA yesterday and also reviewed the status of documents related to NHTSA ODI Investigation EA05-021. This is NOT a FEDERAL recall. It is only at the Engineering Analysis stage at NHTSA. Should NHTSA gather enough information they may be able to discern the exact nature of the defect and force a recall.
Volvo has taken the action of extending the warranty on the ETM component and upgrading software in the ECM for the ETS system under an agreement with CARB to avoid litigation and a class action law suit in California.
See here: http://www.fazmiclaw.com/Volvo.html

Re: 155 ETM Re-programming not a federal recall (Matt S.)

Had my C70 ETM recall (software update) done a couple of days ago. Now the car is noticeably more responsive off the line. I find myself spinning tires during turns (inadvertently of course ) .
I had not read any of the messages here before today, so it can't be psychological...
Does anyone out there have a credible technical explanation for this change?

Re: (MadeInJapan)

Well, that's scary to say the least.
So if I get this right, that "failing" ETM was only on 1999 to 2002 models.
Pardon my ignorance, but what is the difference of nature between the 2 versions of the ETM (prior to 1998 and 1999 and after)?
Has Volvo changed that failing type of ETM on newer models?

I don't have a technical credible explanation for why your C70 is more responsive off the line after the ETM upgrade, but mine is noticably peppier, too. I'm really enjoying it.

Re: (LucasC70)

1998 C70 throttle was mechanical. 2003-2004 C70 throttle went to a new design that does not have this problem.
1999-2002 are the "bad" years for the ETM.
