Looking at the 09 XC70 to replace a BMW 325xi sport wagon in about 3 months. We have driven Japanese and German cars with built-in Nav for many years.

For those of you with first-hand experience, how does the Volvo Nav perform compared to the competition? Are you happy, satisfied, disappointed? Is ease-of-use OK? Is the pop-up screen a distraction?

Thanks in advance!

i had the nav in my R and i loved it! it was in a perfect spot to see the nav and the road. Once you get used to the menus it easy as 1,2,3. i like it better than my moms iDrive

There are many detractors of Volvo's OEM nav system, but I, for one, love it as it sits perfectly within your line of sight and the steering wheel controls are fabulous. Just beware that on the EUCD cars, the nav is disabled while the car is moving. A BIG http://********************/smile/emthdown.gif compared to earlier cars.

Huge, huge, HUGE detraction, in my book.

The nav screen placement is amazing.

The disabling of controls while driving is asinine. Especially as there's a REMOTE for the passenger to use.

(In all fairness, not ALL controls are disabled, of course. But quite a number of them are).

I had the older factory nav in my late V50. It was fully functional while the vehicle was in motion. I loved that.

The factory nav in my XC70 T6 is somewhat disabled. You cannot add an address while the vehicle is in motion, but you can add a point of interest.

Say your on a road trip on the freeway, you can find gas stations, restaurants, etc. while the vehicle is in motion.

It is my understanding that the disabling of the nav while in motion is an industry wide safety measure on vehicles sold in the US. As states crack down on distracted driving, I will not be surprised when aftermarket units are similarly disabled while in motion.

I would love for some Volvo person to PM me the vida code so I could tell my local indy which download is needed. Oh and If you could include the download number that allows the windows to be lowered and raised from the remote, that would be great too.

Yes, I know I'm dreaming....

..

Nope. My 2007 Acura has NO restrictions and the 2009's are still the same.

I'm pretty certain that all BMW, Toyota and GM products are disabled. I can't remember where I read it, but it was some voluntary industry agreement. IIRC it was the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers. Honda is not a member, but Ford is.

Correct.

Lexus nav systems are disabled as well. Same for BMW and Mercedes Benz.

I just put in the garmin gvn53 in with the volvo popup display (well aftermarket copy)..thegarmin allows all control while moving.. also it seems to have more POI and shows the buildings around you as you are moving (titles them)...you can also get an fm traffic receiver with a 60 dolllars lifetime cost. I had the volvo navigation before but think the garmin is more powerful. Its a good option and keeps the factory nav interface
