My XC90 got rear ended and we're going to be getting a new bumper. I'm hoping I could take this opporunity to install a generic reverse backup system. Body shop can order the bumper with or without the factory holes. I've found generic systems where most require a 20mm hole, a few require 21mm. I've even seen mention of 22mm sensors.
Can anybody tell me what diameter the factory holes are? And is it a nice clean flat hole that one could just snap a sensor into?
thanks!

Re: 06 reverse radar sensor size? (pattyweb)

I am not sure of the factory system size, but do not get an aftermarket system. The factory unit is ~$340 for the kit and not counting the bumper removal, takes ~20 minutes to install. You do need a dealer software patch, but it does work well. Also, it mutes the radio and beeps through the rear speaker.
I would not like to "rig" a system on a $50K+ vehicle when the factory one is affordable and reliable.
http://vparts.autowebaccessori...7.php
Also Brentwood Volvo in St Louis will usually beat anyone's prices on mail order parts.
http://www.brentwoodvolvoparts...x.jsp

It's $340 and most likely my dealer would charge me at least another $100 for the software install. At least $100 to install software to make a feature work that's technically already plugged in. What a joke. Thank god we don't need software updates whenever a bulb blows.
I can get an aftermarket system for under $100. I wouldn't be surpirsed if it used the same electronics as volvo seeing as volvo doesn't really make this system, some company in europe supplies most everything for everybody (I found volvo listed at their site a while back). Reliability isn't an issue either.
Anyways, that's not the real issue why I'm not wanting to go with the volvo system. I now have an aftermarket stereo installed and the factory amp is not doing anything so it would be harder for me to make the factory system work properly. My new stereo has a mute wire that I can make use of. 12v and reverse light are all set and ready to go in the back where the new amps are. An aftermarket system would be easiest right now.
The gotcha is that the body shop can order one of two bumpers for the car. One comes with the holes premade. I can't find out what size holes they are though. I'd hate to get the bumper and find that the holes are bigger than necessary because volvo uses some wierd spacer, insert, snapin, whatever and then be forced into the volvo system.
If I can find out what size the hole is and it works, then I'll get it. Otherwise, I'll just get the same bumper and worry about reverse sensors some other time. Was just trying to get them in since the body shop was going to have to replace the bumper.
pat

The bushings help accomodate the curves in the bumper.
May be your dealer may be able to get you just the bushings? Or you could try a local junkyard.

Re: 06 reverse radar sensor size? (Parts @ Boston Volvo)

Thanks for the reply! Looks like I'll just need to go with the regular bumper and do this some other time.
Out of curiousity:
Does volvo sell those bushings separately? If so, how much and what diameter are the volvo sensors themselves?
What's the part number and cost for the volvo punch tool?
pat

Go aftermarket.
The Volvo system isn't very good. It allows you to get too close to an object before it starts warning you... my $.02 worth.

Pattyweb, for $24 you can get the four bushings and the puch tool and do the install at any time.
for $2.63 you can get one bushing and see the inside diameter find out if the aftermarket sensor works or not, then go for the rest later.
