We are seriously considering replacing our 04 XC90 with an 06, mostly due to a number of warranty issues we've experienced with our XC. We are also coming up on needing new tires, a major service and new brakes - not really feeling like sinking money into the vehicle if its going to go down the road...
I'm not too concerned about many of the changes to the upcoming 07 (exception being the projector xenon lights). And for all the bashing the 2.5T engine takes I think it is perfectly fine.
Any consensus on whether to take a late production run vehicle (that should have all the kinks worked out) or take a flyer on an early production 07?
My gut tells me to get the 06.
I had a similar experience with on 02 and 05 V70. 02 was not so good while 05 was very reliable and well sorted. All I had to do with it was change the oil.

Re: 06 now or 07 in 6 months? (JGP)

I like the upgrades that the 07 is offering, but not sure weather they will be standard or not. Not to mention I'd put money on a price increase in 07. I would imagine there will be deep price reductions on remaining 06's come July and August to make way for the 07's. I'm waiting for my 06 to make it across the Atlantic and trying not to regret waiting for the 07.
Question: Do you want to wait for the 07's and deal with the mark-up of a new model? I remember the price gouging at some dealers when the 03's first came out.

I have a feeling your decision will come down to one based on cost. If you notice, alot of the new items on the 2007 are "options". I would assume these will come at a price along with the model year 2007 overall possible price increase. I guess it depends on how badly you want to "face lift" items.
Good luck

IIRC we ordered out 04 V70 in May and it arrived mid July 03 -- I believe it came with the 2nd shipment for our dealer. It was special ordered from the factory. They mentioned that they have finished the pre-orders and have to use up one future quota for our vehicle. If you go OSD you may be able to enjoy the same discount that you would have gotten from a late production 06 vehicle.
Freddy

I would definately wait to see how the new 07 model specs out. It may be more advantages to pick up the new 07 depending what are options, what has been replaced with upgrades and the price increase. I like a lot of the improvements so that is why I would at least wait until you get to see prices and options. JMHO

I would not want to be the guinea pig to test the 3.2 I6 though.

If you want the 2.5T version, then my guess is that those will be very deeply discounted this summer. I don't think the 2006 V8 will be "deeply" discounted this summer. Based on the March incentives, it seems that there were a lot of 2.5T available, and most people grabbed the V8.

Also consider that Volvo has had incentives lately as it takes them a bit longer than others to sell a car. Plus, at least until last March, sales were down every month. It finally turned around in March, and the numbers were up. So there's a possibility the incentives may go away.
Unless there's some specific 07 feature you've just got to have, you should still consider an 06.

The decision may get made for me. Have a potential buyer for the XC, if I can get what I want we'll definitely pick up an 06, maybe chip it when its broken in.
If not we'll see what kind of beating the dealer wants us to take on a trade. I always find it surprising that the trade and retail they ask on these are about $10K apart (at least around here). Must be huge money for the dealers in the used cars.
The cost issue should be pretty similar, the dealer doesn't expect the prices to go up dramatically for the 07 (and either way I get X plan at the worst).
