OK, so how stupid do I feel? Own and love my 95 855 T5-R and found fair deal on a well used 2004 V70R (135K one owner dealer serviced). Then I jump on here and read all the issues with the car, in particular, angle gear failure (was replaced under warranty on this car at 40K). So it is my own fault, I guess, that I didnt research the car better ( even though the tech that works on my 855 at large dealer told me that they were solid cars). So my questions/concerns are
1) Roughly what percentage of these angle gears fail?
2) What causes it and can it be prevented?
3) Is it replaced by the same faulty unit or has Volvo upgraded it
4) Why doesnt Volvo stand behind this part failure especially given their track record for reliability.
5) Is there an affordable aftermarket warranty that can be purchased that covers this repair?
I realize that many of you paid a lot more for your cars (paid 8k for mine) and have endured the failure and paid out of pocket to get it fixed. I just dont understand why anyone would spend $2500 to replace a flawed unit?
I dont beat on any of my cars but as most of us own to enjoy its performance and surely dont want to worry about killing my car every time on drive it hard. Either way if it fails I will get the IPD chip and drive around in my 340 horse FWD tire burner (glorified 855 I guess, certainly better looking) before I ever spend that kind of money on a seemingly band aid fix. Please set me straight if I have misread the situation with these angle gear issues.

Modified by dclarke at 11:44 AM 8-20-2009
Modified by dclarke at 11:58 AM 8-20-2009

Modified by dclarke at 12:00 PM 8-20-2009

Re: 04 V70R KEEPER OR CASH FOR CLUNKERS CANIDATE? (dclarke)

There are hundreds of cars without angle gear failures. Tigers down in GA was running his for about 150k miles at anywhere between 350 and 450 hp before it went...and that was only when he booted it hard in the rain while turning.
Stop worrying about it and drive the car.
BTW, you can't drive this car in FWD even stock. You'll smoke the tires from every stop light.

It's like Swine Flu - people got it, everyone's scared of it, but many people are just fine.
Like Joe said, drive it and enjoy it. And if you DO get the flu, you know exactly what needs to be done!

I believe the R is ineligible for the CARS program.
Even if it is, please don't take a rare car off the road forever. Someone else would be happy to have it.

If you have to spend a couple grand for some repairs you are still coming out way ahead of those that bought the car under warranty.
When you refer to "angle gear", are you talking about the angle gear unit itself or the spline sleave? I think there have been far less angle gear failures than spline sleave failures, and Volvo has already confirmed to us (see Ask VCNA thread) that the spline sleave was upgraded. I do not recall anyone having been a 2X victim of a spline sleave failure.

I was referring specifically to the angle gear/spline failure. Also, given the fact that this car had one replaced at 40K should that make me rest easier about this issue?

There is an '00 R that was just clunkered the other day. Your R is still too valuable, but then I think you knew that. Enjoy your new car- sure there will be repairs but you have to expect that.
