I had my DRLs turned off via software at the dealer. I can't remember how it was before I did that, but I can now run with only the fogs and the parking lights if I so choose.
So, can anybody confirm if this can be done with the DRLS still enabled (stock setting)?
- Darell

I cannot turn off the headlights while driving the car, regardless of whether or not I have the fogs on or off. DRL's have been law here for a few years now, so the situation may differ from you guys.
It's too bad because it would be nice in some instances to turn off the headlights entirely, as in some fog even the low beams are too much.
Coastal -
So I'm wondering what happens when you have the switch in the "parking light" position while you drive? Do the headlights come on magically if you start the car while the switch is in that position.
I was under the impression that the DRLs were the same for the entire NA market, mostly to satisfy Canada's law. That would mean mine was the same as yours when delivered, but it is legal for me to turn mine off via the software.
fgratton -
Where does the knob point to be "half way?" Do you mean in the parking light position?
- Darell
Had to run out to the garage to double check...
The headlights turn on regardless of the switch's position upon starting the car, or when driving.
In other words, there is basically NO way of turning the headlights off aside from a pair of wire cutters.
Another thing I have noticed is that the fogs will only run while yer on low beam. If they are turned on, and you switch to high beam, the fogs will turn off. Not sure if this is a normal feature... I thought it was pretty kool though.
Coastal -
Thanks. That clears up a few items. I didn't notice if my fogs go off with the high beams. I'll have to check some time.
Warning! Disjointed, off-topic ramble to follow:
Ya know...if they have all these auto-off features, it sure would make some sense to turn off the heated seats after the car shuts down. But no... If my passenger had the heated seat on, the next time I drive alone, there's usually a "hot leather" smell before I realize what's going on.
Now: I've said it before and I'll say it again. To realize the full benefit of fog lights, you NEED to be able to turn your main headlights off so they don't reflect back off the water. The idea is that you light the road, and view the road through the dark (and thus relatively transparent) fog. But of course...according to the DOT, that would just be too darn dangerous.
Off my box. Umph.
- Darell
Coastal,
In my old '88 Saab 9000 (got the nickname when I sold it, 196,000 miles w/original turbo -- loved that car) the DRL function was controlled by the headlight relay. Some models wouldn't "auto-on" the headlights unless they had the proper relay.
That being said... let's compare relay numbers between your CAN model and my US one. We might find something useful for you.
(running out to take a pic of the sub for your other post)
