Emission service message appeared followed by Check engine light staying ON, used Generic Scan tool to retrieve DTC's and the code P1171 was the only code stored in memory, I have a subscription to ALLDATA where the description for this code is "Long term fuel trim Upper limit"

Has anybody in this group had any experience with this trouble code and what was the fix?

Thx

Re: 01 S60 T5 160K trouble code P1171 EMISSION SERVICE RELATED (HELDER)

OBDII code P1171 = Volvo ECM 261A

Diagnostic trouble code (DTC) information

Condition

The control module receives information from the heated oxygen sensor (HO2S) about the fuel / air mixture when idling at both the lower and upper part-load range. If the fuel / air mixture deviates from λ=1, the short-term fuel trim will compensate for this by adjusting the injection time so that λ=1 is achieved. When the short-term fuel trim makes an adjustment, the integrator median must be adjusted by the long-term trim. Diagnostic trouble code (DTC) ECM-261A will be stored when the long-term trim must be adjusted to almost maximum in the lower part load area.

Substitute value
none

Possible source

Upper limit:
-intake air leakage
-exhaust system air leakage
-low fuel pressure
-defective heated oxygen sensor (HO2S)
Lower limit:
-intake air leakage
-high fuel pressure
-leaking injectors
-defective mass air flow (MAF) sensor
-contaminated engine oil
-oil level too high
-defective heated oxygen sensor (HO2S)

Fault symptom
-none

As JRL States best gues is a bad O2 sensor. http://********************/smile/emthup.gif

Re: 01 S60 T5 160K trouble code P1171 EMISSION SERVICE RELATED (HELDER)

JRL and Eric,

The O2 sensors are probably contaminated and at 160K Km's are due to replace anyway.

I re-set the check engine light almost a week ago with a generic scan tool (MacTools) and so far it hasn't come back, however I will be replacing the two sensors anyway, Any idea how much these O2 sensors cost? Can aftermarket such as NTK or Bosch be used?

Thx for the reply
