My family members have been Volvo owners longer than I have been alive and it is finally time for me to purchase my first. I think that I want a '00 V70XC because I want a wagon with AWD and I like the styling of the first gen XC's. Has anyone had any major problems with theirs? Anything that I should watch out for?
Thanks for the help.
BAM

Re: '00 V70XC - What should I watch for? (volvovolvo)

The big thing w/ those cars is the ETM. But, that's being taken care of by Volvo. Other things to watch for, is make sure that the timing belt was done close to the service interval, or if it hasn't been done, negotiate the price to reflect that it needs to be done. Check the wear on the tires. It's been reported that significant difference in tread depth, front to rear, on these cars will kill the angle gear. Other stuff is just general maint. issues. Check to make sure all the power windows work w/ the master as well as the window-specific switch.
If you can do work on the car yourself, you'll save yourself some big money. Front and rear brakes on these cars are pretty simple and straight forward. Same goes for front struts. Otherwise, find a good independent shop that you trust. If you're going to take it to a dealer, be prepared to open you wallet.
There are several good online sources for parts. eeuro, fcp-groton, erie-vovo, ipd (for the performance stuff), etc. Get to know them.

Re: '00 V70XC - What should I watch for? (volvovolvo)

I purchased an '00 V70 XC in the end of October of '05 from a dealer with 41,000 miles. I now have almost 60,000 miles on it (7 months later) and so far, no problems. When I purchased it I took it to my Volvo/Saab Independant mechanic and asked him to replace all the fluids/oil/additives dealing with the trans and driveline and look it over in general, but he found nothing wrong that was apparent, and the oil I did myself. I also took it in relatively recently to get an ETM upgrade (for free) at the local dealer, and I have been visiting the dealer for the mileage services just to get the book stamped... in case I have to sell it, it has all the dealer services on it.
If you are looking for one, look to see that the dealer has serviced it. You have to keep in mind that the AWD is reportedly very sensitive to tire wear, so rotate your tires every oil change and you cant go wrong. There have been issues with the center bearing on the prop shaft that goes to the back...rebuilding is a pain if at all possible. The angle gear is also an expensive part to replace if it goes. The ETM will fail and Volvo covers the replacement/reprogram under an extended warranty. AWD means a little more maintenance, but you do get the good traction, and a nice rear suspension set-up.
So far (fingers crossed) no problems. After having V70R AWD suspension on it, Samco Silicone hoses, and a few other nick0nacks to make it more fun, it has been great! AWD is GREAT in the snow.
I just keep getting a P0422 code on a check engine light and I think Im at the point where I am just going to start replacing vaccuum lines until the code no longer emits fault, but thats relatively easy.
when i got mine:

this winter with R suspension

as it is now

P1 XC's are cool
