So, while waiting on the last parts for my ‘03 V70R and waiting to go see the guy across country about the ‘98 V70R I decided to do something about my OCD and claustrophobia everytime I have to wrench on my car.

5 days deep into cleaning out the garage from all of the old Volvo, Volkswagen beetle and Audi parts. Loads of service manuals and new parts from the 1970s to 1980s era for cars from the other side of the iron curtain. Had to hide some of the logos underneath my hand. :D

All in all, EVERYTHING is getting sorted and stored elsewhere, garage is getting a deep clean, I need a sterile, clean environment to wrench on the R’s

WOW ... thought these were stills from The Silence of the Lambs (film) 👀

Ran an errand.

Cleared the Maintenance Required message.

Since I'm going thought eliminating panel noises I have most of my panels out. I took out a spare to inflate and noticed some rust around drain plugs. To get a better access I removed some floor panels and discovered few more small spots where paint was bubbling. So I dremel-ed those out, coated with rust converter and painted it over. But this discovery made me thinking that this is probably the top of the iceberg as I'm pretty sure these rusty spots coming from welding spots that only accessible from underneath and I'm pretty certain these are not accessible with out removing the entire rear suspension :(
Are you sure you don't just have a leak? I'm no expert but I'd think if it were rusted through from the bottom you wouldn't be able to grind on it and hit bare metal. It looks solid from the pics.

Took the XC70 out to run an errand and had somebody decide to pull out in front of me. So, full emergency braking time! Uh, hello, why isn't this slowing down more? Had my foot in it pretty hard. Fortunately, they stopped, which allowed me to go around them. I have always thought the braking was a bit weak on the XC70, even with the 305mm brakes up front. Now, I know. So, the 316/308 upgrade just got moved to the top of the priority list.

Put the new sub frame bolts in the 04 XC70 and torqued to spec, installed new axle bolts and torqued to spec. Checked and added some fluid to the angle gear on the 05 XC70.
I pulled the rear wheels and brakes from the 05 XC70 to allow me to check the wheel bearings. The bearing feel fine but I found that the caliper guide pin were dry as a bone and the only grease on the pins was rock hard. The pads were slightly wedge shaped. I have no idea how old the rear brakes are, they were on the car when I bought it. The pads are less than 50%. Since I have one spare rotor laying around I'm going to get a second one and just do a complete job. I have some new guide pins around here somewhere and I am going to replace them too.

What do you think about it? Looks much like a part out car. Way too much rust. Underside is even worse very likely.

Same thing happened to me a few years ago. I didn’t realize how bad the brakes were on the stock XC70 😬. That was my main reason for doing R calipers and rotors. Braking is much better now.

Down to the last piston on the last caliper and I find this:

No scoring in the bore, which is good. Not available locally. So, I wait for a new one.

Meeting the seller and seeing the car tomorrow. Saturday was postponed.

Dad is bringing VDash and OBDII reader, we’re bringing a jack and gonna see the underside.

I’d say it’s a 50-50 right now. Most people would throw down the gloves right now, but I’m a sentimental, borderline moronic and stubborn person. Unless I see major underside rust or structural problems - I’d likely say it’s still a restoration worthy car. I see a Manual V70R with premium audio and the best year of them all, to add on top. ‘98 is the best one to get out of P80 VR’s according to my buddy in Germany who tunes them. Mechanical enough, not too many electronics, not a lot of problematic points for failure.

Engine, gearbox and shell is the main question right now. I think the current owner dropped the ball majorly on this car and, if possible, I’m willing to drop in the money and year or two of wrench time. It deserves a better send off than being scrapped over this.

Also, I already found out that both Skandix and Klokkerholm makes new Galvanized steel repair kits for rust for these, so the rear quarter panels and door sills can be bought and welded in, repainted.

Just a question of how much structural damage there is.
