There are CarPlay to Android Auto adapters you can buy, and a lot of them also support wireless AA. Unfortunately, I can't recommend any personally, because the one I'm using currently (CarLinkit Ai Box Mini, which to be fair also presents full Android) sometimes takes more than one boot to properly connect to CarPlay.
It doesn't matter if you use a wireless adapter of some kind. Volvo's implementation of AAOS does not support any form of AA. Wireless adapters only work when the infotainment system already support carplay and/or AA.

Back to topic, I've read in a Polestar forum that they would enable the android auto receiver application in a future update.
The problem has been that Volvo developer team has been working to fix the software issues they created with the updates and have not been able to add functionalities.

This is the most important issue I have with the car. I hoped that in 6 months Volvo had fixed this, but still waiting.
Crazy that I need to change my android phone for an iPhone to have the basic functionalities that any basic car has....
I don't know why you would expect Volvo to "fix this" when they have never said they would make AA available.

I also don't know what "basic functionalities" you'll get by going with Carplay. I had AA in my last two cars and I didn't notice any features that are present in AAOS. My own sense is that there is very little need for AA.

Correct, but I'm using an adapter that tricks the wired CarPlay implementation into supporting wired and wireless AA.

Are you saying that there is a way for Carplay on the AAOS to run AA? That makes no sense at all.

I appreciate you point this interesting device out - although you can still color me skeptical (not about your posts, about this device). If it works reliably without huge downsides, I'll be very surprised.

Thanks for sharing though. Super interesting.

I can confirm the 2022 onward, with AAOS does not run Android Auto, wired or wirelles. I'm not sure about future implementations, but whoever says Volvos AAOS fully replaces AA does not fully used or comprehend AA. AA is fully integrated to your phone, where majority of nowadays people lifes are . Two big differences, user interface and app ecosystem. AA UI is far superior than AAOS, you can navigate, get music or radio information and get messages and reminders from your phone in the same screen at the same time. Volvo AAOS UI is poor. Volvos AAOS implementation use your phone to voice calls, text and bluetooth. Period. You will depend of apps direct intalled in AAOS to have access to all information and confort you got in AA, what generated a big problem for me, Volvo AAOS apps availability is, well, limited... I'm not sure if by Volvo or Google, but you only get dehydrated versions for some apps, like maps , spotify or waze. No messaging apps like whatsapp, Fb messenger, no schedule access, no phone reminders etc. Etc etc. I would guess some 30 apps available, lots of games and web rádios, but missing some major players. Another big issue, you only get dashboards maps, voice navigation and HUD indications for google maps. Waze will only show very poor indication in your dashboard.

That's the rub--it's very much not reliable so far, at least for me. I don't know if it's the oddball screen resolution causing issues, the fact that the CarPlay-to-AA solution is very much a kludge, or an over-ambitious feature set given the device hardware, but this is very much the Wild Wild West in terms of finding something that works.

I still really appreciate you telling us about it. I would not have believed that could be done. Just fascinating.

In fairness, very few infotainment systems allow third party nav apps to control hud.

I think Google's vision is to grow AAOS and aa together so that an app that runs on one runs on the other.

A 2024 XC60 cannot run wireless Carplay nor Android Auto. You can only achieve this by using a wireless 3th party 'dongle', like the mentioned carlinkkit or ottocast or similar. I use my old mobile connected by wire in the armrest and it stays there. In this manner I always have Android Auto. The accounts are linked so most things are synchronized.
But, I barely use it anymore. Google maps or Waze are more than sufficient to use. Messaging, don't need that, but I can still send a text-message by voice via the AAOS system itself. So I'm thinking of removing the old mobile from the car and use the USB-port for a memory stick with some tunes on (and use Audiowagon or something).

First up, you unearthed an old thread: in the meantime AAOS running on our cars does support (wired) Android Auto now (for anyone coming across this thread researching and possibly concluding it doesn't).

I am using the built-in Google Maps (which is quite useful for hybrid power usage calculations based on destination entered), but I really want WhatsApp, Signal and Teams notifications to reach me. I have to use Android Auto for that. And because of that the data USB-C port is blocked by my phone. So for offline music playback I now also have to use Android Auto (PowerAmp), but I'd rather used AudioWagon to bypass the additional quality loss of the music.

I've been told it's a hardware limitation. And as much as I can be hard on Volvo, I'll give some slack here. Volvo didn't plan to still be making the majority of their lineup at this point, so R&D wasn't really spent in ongoing improvements. You can see both the EX30 and EX90 have wireless carplay since they are newer designs. The decision to not go after wireless carplay in the past has several considerations. First, the car can do most things without either carplay or android auto, the it was reasonable to think "those are now outdated". Granted, the app development has been slower than expected and some apps aren't available, but that wouldn't have been known information. One could probably have assumed that Apple Music wouldn't port over. Wired Carplay was planned from the start, though it had a delay with AAOS at launch. Switching from Pandora to Spotify or Tidal shouldn't be that big of a ask though. I'm generally stunned XM is still in business with their spotty service (in hilly areas) and horrible ads in their music stations as well as annoying DJs. I know, the sports... but I don't understand sports either, so it just doesn't do it for me at all. But hey, you still get it as standard too! Google maps is built right in, and even most Apple users use that or Waze (which can be downloaded). WhatsApp... well that's an app developer issue so far as I know. It's not as popular here in the states, I've never used it.

I have XC60 2023. Maybe I can explain this mess with my experience:
AAOS -Android Automotive OS is integrated in Volvo 2022- and usually is enough, but it has a bit older apps and very limited set of them.
Android Auto is mirroring your phone to car screen with google adaptation, much more apps available -still very limited, more uptodate. Volvo support wired AA since v3.3.16 (dec 2024), but if you want to add wireless, you need additional small box, like AAWireless for 60 bucks or so, it works great, almost immediately after you start car. Apple Car Play - similar as above, Carlinkit, Ottocast, ..
I use AAWireless and I'm superhappy with its operation, invisible, fast and reliable.
Few disadvantages of AA vs AAOS
-it sucks phone battery faster than Volvo wireless charger can charge :-(
-touch is less responsive than on AAOS
-almost everything is forbidden by Google while driving, no single text, only voice (SMS, weather, news, ...)
Funny enough, you now have 4 versions of Google navigations apps: Google Maps and Waze on both AAOS and AA. Some of them show also on driver LCD, some of them also on HUD (Maps on AAOS only). Both AA and AAOS still lacks a lot of essential apps, like Teams (just basic support on AA), Zoom, Whatsapp, Viber, proper SMS, USB music play, however you have useless fireplace and so... Google to blame...
Btw. Google Assistant is almost useless in terms of recognition of navigtions locations, I hope they will introduce Gemini soon, first in AA in coming months, then in AAOS in maybe one year.

If you want to have wireless AA and USB drive for music with Audiowagon at the same time, while only one data USB-C port is available - you can add any small USB hub (plenty available in Amazon and USB-C converters) and it will work.

I agree all of that could be done by Volvo itself, but their swedish R&D is sleeping well (no wireless AA/CP, no additional SIM port in TCAM as in Sensus, no 5G, outdated WiFi with weird limitations, very slow WiFi connection, no app for USB music, no music info on driver LCD, useless center key on steering, very limited Settings, ...),... maybe new UX will bring some improvements on SW at least...

Hmm, I guess I need to try that again. When I first got my car I tried using an AAWireless dongle together with my USB storage using a USB hub, but could not got it to work reliably. Maybe I should try again...
