Hi all,

I have a 2016 with a march 2016 manufacture date. It does not have apple carplay and it only has one USB input. I have read a variety of posts on the topic. Is there any way to install this yourself (DIY)? The dealer wants to charge $650 for it which is a bit rich. Part of that is to install a second USB input which I have read is not actually necessary. Wonder what you all think? I'd like to get the functionality but don't want to spend that much on a car that's this old.

Me too ('16 XC90, Carplay, 1 USB port). I'm kind of surprised yours doesn't have it. My XC90 is an early version, and we got Carplay for no additional charge during a scheduled maintenance quite a few years ago.

The only reason to have 2 ports is if someone else wants to charge their phone while you are running carplay (or vice-versus)... which you don't have now anyway.

Dealer is just trying to keep their mechanics busy.

Just do some searching and you’re gonna find instructions on how to download and install it.
That’s how I installed mine.

This was my journey;
  1. Get annoyed at Volvo's cost and need to install a second port
  2. Find Vdash can enable it if you pay them exactly the same money as Volvo wanted on it's 50% off offer earlier this year
  3. Get annoyed at Vdash's cost (reoccurring theme)
  4. Create a forum and invite a bunch of clever people...
  5. Discover how to unlock your CEM (where a cars configuration is stored) and get PINs for the security unlock via VIDA
  6. Discover how to capture and decrypt the .vbf files required to modify - DATA, EXE and SBL.
  7. Discover how to modify said files to enable features on your car that are otherwise not enabled
    1. This is simple Byte switching. 01 to 04 etc. Nothing fancy
    2. The real work is understanding which byte denotes which feature - but we worked that out too
  8. Share a bit too much of this on the internet and discover Volvo changed how VIDA presents data. (info available at my website https://v-spa.net)
  9. Discover how to work around everything that Volvo changed
    1. Learn to keep ones mouth shut this time.
  10. PROFIT. I jest. I've not made a penny out of this.

TLDR; Volvo will tell you it's Software that needs to be installed. It's in reality a simple Byte change in the CEM.
You can do this yourself and for free if you want to spend 6 months on it.

:)

I apologize for bringing up a dead thread, but you are the closest I’ve seen to somebody doing it.

The dealership won’t even offer to do it for me because they say they only update cars 4 years or newer.

Is there any chance you could teach me or charge me to tutor me on this? I checked your website but it’s currently just the host platforms preview

thank you for your time

Recently bought a v60 2020 and Im only at step 2 on your frustration list so far :)
If possible i happily stay away from the subscription path with Vdash and Orbit (spaycetech).

Would really appreciate if you could give me some hints to the right path.

As was stated in the other thread, this is a SPA car they are working on, yours is a P3, totally different platforms, hardware, and possibilities. No Volvo software updates for P3 to get carplay.

As you just joined the OrBit forum you might have seen I'm an Admin there.... so a little biased.

Honestly, with the PIN service - which avoids all the complexities of VIDA subscriptions, traffic sniffing etc. - it's a solid option if you're looking to tinker with your car.

10. above still stands for me, I'm not commercially affiliated with OrBit. Just a guy that likes tinkering and helping others. Power6 was one of the original members of my forum hence I've ended up over there.

Thanks for the reply!
Will do some reading and take a closer look at Orbit.
Was trying to stay away from subscription sites but it will save a lot of time.
