This is for Volvo techs or any tech doing pistons and rings. Here is another way to set up the balance shaft timing. You may or may not be aware of this. Instead of setting up and using the dial indicator gauge. Push the balance shaft all the way back. Bolt the lifting eye against the balance shaft. Insert a .75 mm feeler gauge between the 2 and tighten the balance shaft assembly. All done timing is set.

Hi I need help !, Ive just rebuilt my d4204t5 xc60 engine due to high oil consumption, started it up but now have this high pitch noise, sounds like a turbo whistle or a accessory drive belt thats too tight, cutting a long story short I think its the balancer. it was silent before i removed it now its loud. I thought i followed the manual which said remove it and then install it. looking at your thread above i think Ive f*cked up. can I re-time/set up my original ? please tell me what i need to do
Many thanks Simon

Hi, yes, there is a set up procedure in Vida, you loosen the bolts and tap the balance shaft towards the oil pressure sensor (towards the rear of the car while watching with a DTI gauge, then reset the DTI and move the balance shaft forwards again 0.75mm. Then put a 1/2 inch spanner one of the gear on the balance shaft and you should see and feel back lash. I had to fit a new balance shaft as I could not get mine right, even with the new balance shaft I can hear it a little. I've got an email going back and forth with volvo about it. I spoken with a volvo master tech he confirmed they are very temperamental, and his changed loads

Thanks. It's a great help. I use VIDA clone and I found .To ensure correct backlash, the balance shaft housing is shimmed to the engine block at the assembly plant. If the balance shaft housing must be removed, the entire engine block must be replaced. I will buy the set of pistons with the hope that it won't burn any more oil.
