Hello, During a windshield chip repair, the Technician scratched the front of the roof rail. I've gotten quotes to fix or replace the rail. My question to the group is, how does the roof rail come off? One shop said he had to remove the headliner the other shop said it was an external removal. As you can imagine the labor rates are very different. Does anyone know the true answer? I called my local Volvo dealer and they didn't know (Hmmm!) doesn't give me much faith in using their service in the future.

I'd bet it's the worse of the two options. And I wouldn't hold it against the service person you talked to about taking it off... I can't think of a single repair which that would be done. Even if the dealership had a body shop, you were probably talking to the service department when you should have been talking to the body shop. IMO... it's a bigger concern that the two body shops you talked to didn't both give the same answer.

Agree, I was talking to the Service Dept. We don't have any Volvo dealerships that have a body shop, they referred us to an Authorized Shop who did say the headliner had to be removed. It's not that I don't trust them but I would prefer the headliner remain intact. I could see that being a problem down the road if it wasn't re-installed properly. I don't like to mess with what the manufacture has done. The shop that stated they could replace the rail by popping it off externally without removing the headliner obviously had the cheaper labor rate but if they haven't done it before do I risk them doing more damage?? thank you for your feedback.

Headliners are indeed a bear. Though if the shop damaged it, they'd be responsible (just like I hope the shop that did the glass is paying for the scratches). If you're paying for this out of pocket... I'd either get a body shop to paint it as good as they can by just masking it off, or pay them to do it right and remove it right. Personally I'd go with masking and painting in place for the small area of a not totally vital surface. Blending won't be a big deal because it'd not the same as the body color black anyhow.

The headliners are not that difficult to work with and come down quite easily. They are held up by five or six velcro type fasteners in the center and the plastic panels and weather strips along the sides.

All that's needed is to drop it down a few inches on the side of concern, do the work and re-install.

thank you for clarifying how they drop down. Hopefully when they reinstall it's the same as from the factory.

How did you end up deciding, change the roof rail or paint it?
I have an equal problem but my roof rail has corrosion and my fear, although the car is still in warranty against corrosion is the disassembly and assembly work bring more damage.

We ended up not fixing it, too concerned about the quality of work and the potential for other issues to occur.

I always thought that Volvo in Sweden provided a high quality service. In Portugal the quality of mechanical interventions does not inspire me much confidence either. However, as it is corrosion in the roof rail, which is spreading, I will have to make the repair. Thanks for the reply

It's disappointing that you can't expect good service these days, but that seems to be an issue in most areas of service today. Good luck

I'm sorry to bother you again but can you let me know if the anti corrosion guarantee in Sweden covers corrosion on the rail roof?
I ask you this question because in Portugal I have been informed that rail roof is an accessory (although all Volvo xc40s have them installed ex-factory) and as such are not covered by the anti-corrosion warranty.
Thank you
