I test drove a C70 the other day. I did it because my S40 was at the shop for some work and so I took an hour test drive of a nice convertible.

This was a 97-05 style. I felt it had some jitters when I accelerated. I loved the interior. The lack of a roof was fantastic. It was just a fun car.

I'm wondering how are these cars to own? Are they reliable? Would you consider them a problematic car? Are the parts expensive compared to other Volvos? Should I opt for the coupe rather than the conv?

I would say they are more expensive then other (comparable) volvo's. This is based upon the price of parts compared to our estate ('97 GLT) versus our convertable ('99 2,4 LPT)

Brakes are bigger - bigger rims, brake pads, etc.
Less cars produced, less problems are "known" and more solutions are rigorious .
The roof and windows are expensive parts when they fail.

But dont get me wrong:
I wouldnt trade my C70 for the world

Some common problems:

electronic throttle module
window cartridge
window switches
key sensor antenna ring

The first two are expensive, though Volvo has extended the warranty on the ETM. Search the forum for these to get a feel for the issues.

There is no ETM on the 1997 to 2000 model years so no worries on that one if you buy in those years.....there is also a little more horsepower to be had in the non ETM models if your into tuning. (note 1997 MY is not available in the US)

From my experience, the most awful car I've ever owned. Mechanically its reliable, but the rattles and creaks from the trim are horrendus. The handling is well below anything from sister company Ford and the boomy engines soon get weary.

But it looks amazing!

Sure. You don't know it, but your mechanical woes started well before you bought the car - when Volvo installed the steering wheel on the wrong side!

I've had my C70 for over a year now, and the only problem was the mass air flow sensor. All I had to do was clean it with some $6 sensor cleaner, so that was really minor. You won't believe how many looks I get in my car! No I don't think you understand.... I ride with my friend around Tampa in his Nissan Skyline R-34 GTR, and honestly I have to admit that more people like my car better because they don't even know it exists! There is nothing greater than when someone asks you about your car and you say,"Oh, I have a Volvo C70!" And they say,"Whats that!? Volvo makes a coupe!?!" And then you get to educate them on your brilliant car! It really is something special to drive this car. I love everything about this vehicle! Get one!!! http://********************/smile/emthup.gif
