Hi all,

I am seriously considering purchasing a 2015.5 V60RD Polestar. It has 135k miles and is listed for 16.5k.

I will be coming from a 2022 Mazda CX-5. It's fine, but I want a wagon, and this one is local to me.

Assuming everything checks out, PPI etc,. how much can I expect to pay over the next 50kish miles? Are there specific components that are likely to go bad? I have seen some people claim that maintenance for the P* is higher than a normal V60RD due to the more expensive brake and suspension components. How much more?

Anyone want to try to talk me out of this? Anyone who owns a P* 2015.5 V60RD care to share their specific experiences?

Thanks a ton!

The higher Polestar costs on suspension and brakes won't be an issue, an R Design doesn't have those, only normal suspension and brakes. The car you're describing has Polestar optimization, basically a 45hp tune.

Strut bearings will wear out, PCV can go bad, keyless door locks are a problem area, I'm trying to think of what else commonly goes wrong, overall though from my understanding and so far, experience, outside of what I'd expect to wear out and need to be replaced, solid reliable cars.

Unless I am misunderstanding, the 2015.5 V60 RD P* has Ohlins suspension as opposed to the normal v60 suspension.

It looks like it's just a P3 T6 RD with the polestar tune. 6 cylinder? Same issues as any other T6. Most need significant front suspension work by 100k -- struts, bearings, sometimes control arms. By 10 years or 150k, the serpentine belt is a major job unless you are a competent DIY. PCV, plugs, coils, Haldex service, Transmission service, brake fluid, other stage one stuff will need to be done unless the car was very well maintained. Most of those items would not be on Volvo dealer radar.

Thanks all. Appreciate the info! Not sure why I found the whole polestar tuning thing so confusing. Going to see the car today and hopefully plan a PPI for next week. Will be sure to ask about the accident that required towing. Cheers

I've experienced high oil consumption on the inline six once they reach 60K + miles.

It's just the optimization that all RD cars got for this year - in future years it became optional. It adds 25 hp/29 ft lbs of torque.

The full on Polestar models have a bunch of other enhancements.

Polestar optimization is a software tuning. True factory polestars contain design and interior differences. The R-Design isn't a polestar, as it simply got a later polestar software tuning only at some point.

I've seen this on a few accounts, but I think overall its not a common issue like it is on the 5 cylinders. Granted I only have 80k miles, but I don't burn a drop of oil between 10k intervals. Use LiquiMoly and regularly beat the **** out of my car.

From my research, basically nothing expensive really fails on the late SI6 cars short of the pcv valve, and strut bearings. Expect rubber components to still wear like any other vehicle (control arm bushings, motor mounts, etc) but as far as the drivetrain is concerned they're very robust.

Polestar optimization was standard from the factory on the six cylinder T6 RD cars from 2012 to 2016 - it became optional on the Drive E cars from latter 2016 to 2018 (and continues to be optional on anything Volvo produces).

Good to know. Thanks.

Either way, factory (2012-16) or later model, this car only has the software and none of the polestar hardware.
