i read somewhere here that the switch fails quite often

AC blows cold for about 20 -30 minutes and then blows warm or hot,,
Nope, they don't fail. What's the low side pressure when the ac stops blowing cold? If you "think" that's the problem checking the pressure first before buying a part that might not fix it would be a good diagnostic step, rather than guess and replace.

A common solution to your possible symptom - the ac clutch wears, and when it gets hot (after driving for xx minutes in warmer weather) the clutch gap becomes too large for the magnetic field to close the clutch. What's the clutch gap? Once the engine cools down does the ac work again every time?

To solve a large clutch gap you simply remove the center clutch plate (with an appropriate puller) and remove shims to hopefully set the gap correctly. The compressor needs to be loosened to get enough room to pull the inner clutch plate off - but the whole job can take less than an hour.

This car is new to me, and i find it difficult to get to various partss due to the compactness of the engine compartment

thanks for the info,, the clutch gap is a good place to start sine you both say the sensor is not the likely problem

thanks, i will stick my nose in there once again

The pic below shows the AC shims, black arrow. It is almost impossible to remove the front half of the AC clutch to remove some shims. Clutch gap will be 0.012 to 0.014 thousands for a good clutch gap. A worn shutting off clutch gap will be 0.024 thousands or more. I use a 3ft long thin blade screwdriver, from the top, jam it in behind each of the 3 curved springs in the red circle. Twist the springs to close up the gap, it does not take much of a twist to close up the gap. If possible do this for each curved spring side, 6x's. Use a strong light, it will take some practice to get in behind the spring. The clutch face will want to roll around. The other pics show the evap temp sensor #15. It can fail and not shut off the AC compressor freezing up the evap core into a solid block of ice. The iced up AC pipe pic was my 2002 XC70. Driving up I-95 for a 6 hr drive, the AC decided to not turn off and freezing up. 100 degree day, 30 minutes with AC, turn AC off, 30 min W/O AC or pull off at rest stops and let it thaw out. #15 sensor fixed it. The evap sensor is beside the gas pedal area.

Agree with the direction given. This is what we had on our s60- same issue and would have been fixed this way but it also ended up needing the whole compressor.

thanks,,. both of you

we had 2 days of short pants weather but back into colder temps,.. will look into it when it aint so cold

BYW, i have never seen a 3' screwdriver in my life

This 24" one should work. From Amazon or search for gearwrench 80068h
