Many thanks everyone for your support and compassion.

In my letter to Volvo UK, I have asked them to directly explain why a function that the car had when I purchased it, can be decided by Volvo to be later taken away? (It would be like taking your car in for a service and finding the electric windows buttons had been removed and replaced with blanking covers)

I really, really hope that there has been a major breakdown in communication between Volvo and the dealer and that maybe the dealer misunderstood what Volvo was telling them or Volvo did not explain it to the dealer correctly.

Bringing the Balance & Fader controls back is simply a software coding activity as these controls were there originally in the first place, so the coding obviously still exists somewhere in their code library e.g., v1.7.

I’ll keep you posted on the response from Volvo UK.

Using double-sided tape to stick the Walkman on the instrument panel is something that spoils the look and is not standard equipment, ie it is not an original Volvo factory product.
By your logic when you have a problem with the engine, Volvo takes out the engine and installs a 20-year-old engine from a written-off car or buys a cheap Chinese engine for $ 2,000 . Problem solved

Explain to me on what basis you would ask for a significant refund or even take the car back and refund the entire purchase, which is the basis that you can request from a Volvo dealer
I ask for the legal basis on which you will make that request
Thanks
1. Please recognize hyperbole when it is used in discussion.
2. Scenario: I visit a dealership to buy a car and, after evaluating the "features and benefits" (marketing speak) of an offered product - and note, the relative importance of those functions reflects my needs/wants, I buy the car. The manufacturer supplied "updates" subsequently and without notice, degrades or eliminates some of those functions. This is no longer the product that I purchased. I am not an attorney and certainly not an expert in contract law but it seems to me that this would fall under implied "reps and warranties" and something is broken. (One typically finds, hidden in the fine print, that the manufacturer will not guarantee ongoing availability of various services requiring external connection to sources over which they have no control e.g. the current kerfuffle over the shut down of 3G cellular protocol. This is not such a case. There is no external constraint)

1. What you don’t like in my answer is engine replacement or something else. Your use of sided tape and Walkman is so cute and funny

2. You can only hire a lawyer if you have a written record that Volvo has described in Owners manual use of this audio system and its features. Among other things, state where the specifications of the audio system and its characteristics exist with balance and fader setting
Please call a lawyer and ask him for advice and opinion regarding a significant refund or even take the car back and refund the entire purchase because it is missing balance and fader setting

I haven't read a funny comment for a long time, a significant refund or for the seller to take the car back and refund the whole purchase due to the lack of audio settings Balance and Fader

BigBang you may actually be onto something.

If you compare the last Sensus MY21 Late XC60 user manual page for ‘Sound Settings’, you can see that they explain everything out in detail, with the features available.

Compare the same ‘Sound Settings’ user manual page for the AAOS MY22 Early/Late XC60, and you find next to no detail.

It’s almost as if Volvo believe that if it’s not written and detailed in the user manual, they can do whatever they like regards the functions of your car. If this is Volvo’s game then this could be seen as being deceitful and devious as a manufacturer to their customers.

I know that this does not exist in Owner's Manual for MY 2022 with AA OS, so I wrote that mentioning the lawsuit is ridiculous
That is why I have stated that there is no possibility of looking for something that does not exist in writing
There is currently no option to download PDF Owner's Manual for MY2022

When I first got my MY22 XC60 Inscription (AAOS/Google) car in Nov 21, the audio system had Left/Right Balance & Front/Rear Fader controls – as well as Bass & Treble controls. You could also select a seating position on screen which would provide a pre-set Balance & Fader setting based on this, or you could adjust Balance & Fader manually to your own preference.

When the car had its first OTA update from v1.7 to v1.8, all of the Balance & Fader controls disappeared and were no longer available from the car’s audio adjustments. The only adjustment available was for the front speakers to be both fully on or both fully off. This was the same for the rear speakers.

Thinking this must be a software bug introduced with v1.8 I decided to contact Volvo UK to confirm this. Sadly, Volvo UK were unable to confirm anything. My dealer did confirm that you should have Balance & Fader controls and that hopefully the next OTA update would fix this.

I patently waited until the next OTA update and within a few months, v10.1 was downloaded, but sadly still no Balance & Fader.

The car went into the dealer yesterday for the new v2.0 update as well as updating everything else and having a full diagnosis done on the car. Fingers crossed I would get my L/R Balance & F/R Fader controls back.

After getting the car back I immediately noticed that the Balance & Fader had still not returned. Upon speaking with the service manager, he said that Volvo had told them that it had been decided by Volvo to remove the L/R Balance & F/R Fader controls from the car! I could not believe what I was hearing. So, the disappearance of the Balance & Fader controls was not a software bug, but a conscious decision by Volvo to remove it. Unbelievable!

A very direct letter to Volvo UK has been sent.

Very sad. Which audio system is in your car? B&W?

The right panel says: For additional sound settings, go to settings

and tap Sound.

What happens when you do that?

This is a vexing topic.

On one hand, I think it's unreasonable to demand a buy-back over something like this. On the other hand, it's crazy that Volvo would remove this feature.

Ultimately, Volvo needs to re-add the feature via a (free) software update, imo. That's the proper outcome.

I agree.

I suspect that those who are waiting for "features" – myself included – have a long, long, long wait ahead. The whole AAOS is such a piece of filth.
  • Using Sirius XM is unpleasant given that the picture, station, or song information updates haphazardly.
  • Using a bluetooth source is annoying given that you have to navigate your device while driving. (No CarPlay.)
  • No FM HD radio. I live in a market with extremely good public radio stations.

I figure that these things will be fixed the day before I trade my 2022.

In the UK we have 3 levels of audio available:
  • Premium Sound (Bowers & Wilkins)
  • High Performance Pro (Harman Kardon)
  • High Performance
I have the default 'High Performance' audio system. The other two are additional cost options.

It's breach of contract. But they probably have the typical bs software company disclaimer that basically says "you give us money, shut up and don't complain." Which has been found unenforceable, by the way.

Have you tried the voice commands?
Yes, tried this a while ago, with no success.

I assumed that if the software in the system is not showing Balance & Fader controls on the screen, that the voice command would have nowhere to go. as the function is not there.

Sadly. it just takes you to the Sound Settings screen, which for me only includes Bass & Treble adjustments and the ability to turn the front and rear speakers to being ether fully off or being fully on - No Balance or Fader controls.

That sucks. I wonder why Volvo would degrade their products when other manufacturers, like Lexus and Toyota, constantly improve theirs? I fear they’ve hit a foul ball here. I am questioning my own pending purchase.

Contact an attorney. Have them sue on a contingency basis. Failing that get a set of magnetic signs for car. VOLVO SUCKS, drive back and forth in front of the dealer, park it on the road nearby, become a major PITA! Personally, I wouldn't take this crap. You PAID for a vehicle with the options you wanted....what's next, they take out seat heaters for your "own good"?

Reply back from Volvo UK. Not quite sure how to interpret this:

“Hi *

Thank you for your email. I am sorry that this has been removed from the car with the recent upgrade.

The audio controls are no longer in the system, however, this is something on the list of discussion points with our digital colleagues in Sweden, but if and when they will return has yet to be decided. I would be more than happy to escalate this with our technical department who can provide the feedback to the colleagues in Sweden.

Could you please confirm if you would be happy with the above?

Thank you in advance.

Volvo Digital Support Team”

What do you guys reckon?
