Hi All,

New owner here. Just picked up a 2022 XC40 R-Design in Pebble Grey for the wife. She is coming from a 2007 Mazda CX-9 so we are still working through all the tech. One thing she and I both agree on is the stereo system is lacking. We have the High Performance system. With the chip shortage, I drove 5 hours to find this car and it didn't have the HK. I have the stereo pretty much dialed in the best I can get it. The fader needs to move to the rear of the car to fill the dead space behind the driver and "open up" the 6" speakers in the rear doors. This was a significant improvement, however you need to turn the stereo up to pretty far in this configuration and it still has gaps in the sound spectrum.

I have been looking at replacing the speakers as the first step. I have searched and read through many posts, but still have questions. What I learned so far is that the High Performance system is 330 wats and has 8 speakers:

1 - 200mm (~8") Fresh Air Woofer
1 - 100mm (4") Fullrange in the center
2 - 19mm (.75") Tweeters in the A-pillars
2 - 100mm (4") Midrange speakers in the front doors
2 - 150mm (6") Mid-Woofer in the rear doors

I'm assuming that the front tweeters and door speakers are running off the same channels, so that leaves 6 channels @ 330 watts, or 55 watts per channel.

What I don't know is the impedance of the speakers. Are they 8ohm or 4ohm? I also read that the center channel 'fullrange" is already upgraded to the HK and doesn't need replacement. The wife doesn't like thumping bass so the fresh air woofer will meet her needs. So I am looking at replacing the 2 midrange, 2 tweeters, and 2 mid-woofers. If the speakers are 8ohms, that would open up the availability of finding decent 4" midrange speakers without breaking the bank. Another question I had was whether the car is pre-wired for the HK? If I remove the speaker blanks in the cargo area, will I find wiring for the 80mm fullrange speakers?

Appreciate any thoughts you all may have and help with the impedance question. I haven't taken the door panels off yet, but I watched a few videos on how it is done so I could try and get a look at a speaker. One video did show the speaker, but there was nothing on the magnet showing impedance or wattage.

Thanks,
Jamie

Takes a lot of effort and know how to replace speakers since they are all plastic welded to the door panel. Amp replacement is required for improved sound, but that is pretty tricky since it's all software-driven. Hopefully you can find some documentation online for what you want, but it is quite involved when upgrading and very few do it. Of course you void the warranty on all those components as well as wiring harnesses, so keep that risk/reward in mind.

I agree with you that the HK could sound better, but I would strongly encourage you to give it a few months before you spend money trying to replace the system. I'm approaching 3000 miles in my 2022 XC40 T5 and I honestly feel that the sound system sounds noticeably better than when I first picked up my car. I've seen others on this site make the same observation that the speakers need a bit of time to break in.

When I first starting driving my XC40, I almost exclusively had the surround sound turned on to try and fill things out a bit more. Now I almost never use it as it tends to muffle the audio a bit compared to the standard listening experience. Setting the speaker profile to driver only also makes a big difference, but obviously you can really only do this if you're in the car by yourself.

To echo the below, the native Spotify App on Sensus does sound better than Spotify through carplay or BT (which to me sound exactly the same). The downsides to this are that you have to set the streaming quality to extreme which requires more data and is more susceptible to buffering. It also means that you'll need to pay for internet connectivity through the built-in modem, which I feel provides a more reliable connection vs. connecting to your phone's hotspot. You should have a 3 month free trial to test this out. Mine is going to expire soon but I will likely renew it. I live in a big city and so I have had minimal connection issues with the Spotify app (unfortunately you can't download your library so you are always at the mercy of signal strength). In more rural areas though, I imagine it would be a different story.
There are several posts on speaker upgrades that provide a lot of good info though most of these are for non CMA platform.

Also, have you tried using the native spotify app - that improves the sound slightly.

Thanks for all the replies. Really great information and what I was looking for.

I think I may remove one of the door panels (when the wife isn't around) and get a better idea of what's in there. I'll take pictures and post on here for reference.

If you end up going through all of the trouble to do this replacement I wonder if you should consider picking up B&W drivers to install? Even if you don’t change the amp out I’d be surprised if it didn’t improve the sound dramatically, albeit without the high volume you’d get with a new amp.

Thanks for the pictures and the replies.

The wife is not enthused with me wanting to replace the speakers on a 2 week old car. I will gove the speakers some time to break in and then try and convince her.

Good call on the B&W's. I'll start looking for those. And the pictures are exactly what I was looking for.
