2015 XC60 RD (<39K miles)
Looking back at my older post (Dash Cam and Low Battery Charge) I had the original battery replaced 10/17 (~3.5 years) due to slow crank and dealer diagnosed as bad cell in battery. I did not note down the original battery part #, but the replacement was Volvo 30772221.

Lately I've been seeing battery low messages with the replacement battery. Sometimes it was after operating the power tailgate (e.g. 3-4 cycles) with engine off, but since the car doesn't get enough sustained use (mostly short drives 4-10 miles once or twice a week) I decided to check further. I used a hydrometer to check the individual cells before and after charging (Battery Tender Plus). Battery fluid levels seemed fine, but one cell was one ball low (and remained low even after charging).

Given that the battery is nearing 4 years old (it also has a sticker dated 10/17), should I just start looking for a replacement? Lowest cost for Volvo battery nearby NY/NJ is $225 at a dealer (using the web scheduler for cost), which I imagine will perform a battery reset.
Or go aftermarket (maybe AGM)?
Or can the bad cell issue be reversed with a better charger/conditioner? <= (need one anyway for something else)

On the RDAR update, can that be applied yourself or it has to be done by a dealer? I do use Sirius, and I don't know/need to research if dealer previously applied RDAR update.

Unless Volvo offers some warranty I'd go
Aftermarket for that money. I have a Napa battery in mine. AGM makes the most sense.
did you have to mess with the software at all or just swap the battery

Good question... I got curious so went to Volvo site to check. It says:

Volvo Genuine Parts carry a lifetime warranty* when they're replaced by an authorized dealer. To maximize the time between servicing (up to 10,000 miles) and preserve the original safety and integrity of your vehicle, insist on Volvo Genuine Parts.

* The Customer Lifetime Parts & Labor Warranty does not apply to third party purchasers such as independent repair shops, body shops or on parts purchased over the counter and not installed by an authorized Volvo dealer. The warranty on these parts will be for two years from the purchase date for defects for the part replacement only. Labor will not be included. Part failures due to installation errors will not be covered by any Volvo Part Warranty.

Since my current battery was installed by Volvo (warranty replacement for the factory-installed one), it's probably in my best interest to double check with them. I had assumed any warranty expired with the car, but I could be wrong.

Even if I get a Volvo battery from the parts counter it sounds like it will be two years. HOWEVER, they literally list 9 batteries for my car (entering my VIN didn't help). Capacity seems to range from 590CCA to 800CCA.

How do I figure out which is the right battery? Either to confirm that the dealer-replaced battery was the correct one, or to get the capacity specs to shop aftermarket (2015 XC60 R-design 3.0L 6 cyl turbo)

I also wonder if a different battery box / cover might be needed for the larger capacity batteries.

Unless Volvo offers some warranty I'd go
Aftermarket for that money. I have a Napa battery in mine. AGM makes the most sense.

Thanks Tech.

Just called my servicing dealer. According to them, the warranty replacement battery had a 12-month warranty, so . And if I get a new one installed, the warranty is also 12 months (seems kind of short...?). Plus labor at 185/hr (1 hr minimum).
Parts dept also said my car would use the 600CCA battery (so it sounds like I have the right one - 30772221 is 600cca).

Look at the battery in the car and see what part number it is.

The battery box is quite big. My Napa battery was slightly smaller length wise but it’s lasted over a year without issues.

Any auto parts store usually puts in a battery fir free these days so I wouldn’t pay anyone to put it in.

It’s only held in with one clamp bolt under the cover if I recall. Pretty easy job.
