Re: (MarkE)

using Meguiars clay - still clean, have used it before on a bonnet with no probs - surface I was using it on was vertical - and it made a real mess.

But had washed and dried the car - so will try when wet and lubed.

Re: (PeterM)

Not sure how you used it without lube the 1st time. Clay requires lube, they usually come together in a package.

Re: (ss60)

Thanks ss60. I had posted the following (emphasis added for your clarification)

"I wash and dry the car, use the prescribed "lube", and the clay smears and leaves white clay residue on the panel? Its a bugger to get off!"

Re: Why does the clay smear? (mike_c70)

Surface must always be WET You keep spraying constantly

Are you putting pressure on to the clay? You only need to put "very little" if any, the clay needs to glide over the surface to do it's job.

That, and what Jim said, is the key.

Oh, and use good clay. Griot's clay is really good, much better than the parts store brands. IMO, their speed shine and clay combo works well. Also, get a holder pad, as the clay tends to melt into your hand and stick in the ridges of your skin.

Again as Jim said, DON'T BE SHY WITH THE DETAIL SPRAY / LUBE. That's what it's for. And don't push down on the clay, let it glide along. It WILL work.

And keep cleaning the clay by rotating it, or you'll make your own sandpaper quickly.

The problem is you need to clay the car with it still wet....rinse the soap off, then clay it...use the "lube" too

Don't do that. Water has contaminants in it that you will spread around. Sure, you use less lube, but this isn't what you want to do.

Start with a DRY car, and use plenty of spray.

Re:

If you don't have the "lube" (or run out) just use car wash soap with water (crazy or not I use distilled). Just make sure that the solution is very "soapy". Works just as well. Meguiar's Gold Class car wash works great.

The "contaminants" won't hurt anything.... your just going to spray it all off again anyways..
