Wondering if I could get some feedback on what are my options on an exhaust system for my 06 T5. Currently, the car has an OBX downpipe with a Magnaflow cat welded on to it. I want something this a bit louder and more distinct, but don't want obnoxious cabin drone. I was looking into the IPD system but have heard some bad things about the clamps and how they will have to be welded eventually and heard different things about the drone in the cabin. My other choice is getting a custom fabricated exhaust with a Borla XR1 muffler (around 175 for the fabrication). But if I go that route, will getting rid of the resonator make the cabin too crazy loud?

Just trying to figure out my best options and such. I was going to go IPD first, then liked the Borla set up, but now going back and forth between the two. 🤣

175 for fab is pretty cheap. You could go custom and do a valvetronic muffler so you have quiet when you want and loud when you want. I did that on my P2 and am pretty happy with it.

I actually love the Borla, I get compliments on the sound at least twice a summer. (From some of the big boys). If you are serious about performance but really don't want the drone but want a distinct sound, look at Corsa.

Does yours drone pretty bad in the cabin? And do you have a catted downpipe?
certain revs. For me I'm not the cruiser type. I'm either on it or off it, so I am not bothered by the sound (drone). If it's fast and performs as I like, I turn a blind "ear" to it.

I'm kinda the same way. This one is my summer car that I'm having fun with. I just didn't want an obnoxiously loud drone. I think the Borla may be in my future...

I have a catted DP (IPD) and the IPD oval exhaust. Sound and tone is great driving around town and when you lay into it, but the drone on the highway is quite bad. I cruise mostly at 70-75 and the drone is pretty bad. I had issues with clamps rusting to oblivion and ended up replacing them all with stainless steel units of the same design a few years back and they've been great since then. No leaks or movement through the seasons.

EST does make a system that you can swap in a larger resonator if the tone is too much for your liking. Many moons ago before I got the IPD system, I was originally going to go with the EST downpipe and touring exhaust but IPD had a pretty good sale and I jumped on it.

I've seen the EST/Mototec system talked about a lot on here, is it really that good? It seems to not sound too much different from stock from what I've seen.

I don't know from first hand experience since I have only had the IPD setup, but if you're looking for some more sound, that could be the way to go. I only brought up the EST since they have a swappable mid-section in case you don't like the sound of the sports or touring setup. I've also heard good things about the Elevate exhaust, but have never heard it. Very few R's and T5's in my area so seeing one is few and far between.

Regarding the drone, do you think their downpipe or exhaust is the source?

I can't be 100% sure since they both went on at the same time, but I am fairly certain it is the exhaust.
