Hi all,

I have a MY21 XC90 T8 Inscription Expression aka "Momentum". It does not come with the Orrefors shifter by default like previous model year T8s did. It does have the shift by wire mechanism. So I have tried to install the crystal shifter after purchase via:
1) simply swapping out the knob. I found the part, ordered it and took everything apart to find out that the two knobs are not interchangeable. So...
2) swapping out the whole mechanism. Found that part, took it all apart, installed it and then the car would not recognize the shifter. Although it was installed, it wouldn't shift. Asked the dealer for help and they tried to reset the software etc but still no go. The software in the car/VIDA recognized that my specific car did not come with that shift mechanism and it blocked it.
3) never give up. Swapped out the PCB boards from the Orrefors shifter assembly with the one inside the shifter assembly in my car
WIN!

Part number of the Orrefors shifter assembly: 32280785

General instructions:
The elephant in the room is the disassembly of the center console to get to the gear shifter assembly. This takes a long time. 5 hours for us.
  • we used these instructions and they were pretty much spot on. Volvo XC90 Center Console Removal - katharsys blog.
  • yes, we had no choice but to remove the passenger seat. There is a ground cable from the console that is screwed on to the floor under the amp under the passenger seat
  • get a lot of good trim tools to remove the wood trim holding the volume/climate controls. In general the trim tools were needed a lot to pry so much of the center console stuff apart safely
  • once the console is removed, 30% of the work is done. The console is one huge layered bundle of plastic and electronics. Unfortunately, the gear sifter assembly is on the last layer. One must disassemble the console to get to the gear shifter assembly

Disassembly of the center console
  • have a torx set. There were a lot of torx screws. T25 and T15 were both used.
  • be organized. There were 100 screws total removed total. Taking photos and having extensions for the torx bits were necessary. We had a 4" extension holding on our power screw driver for many different screws in hard to reach areas
  • there was an 11mm bolt that had to be removed
  • once you are done with this part, you have completed 50% of the job
  • you do need to pull up the rubber mat at the bottom of the console cabinet to access two bolts

Swapping out the PCB boards
  • the shifter assembly is held together with 4 T15 screws on the factory assembly and 5 screws on the Orrefors
  • There are four clips holding the faceplate in place that can be easily removed and lifted up
  • the factory assembly needs to be wiggled apart since the knob does not come out. OPTIONAL: You can remove the knob by using a pry tool to pry off the right side chrome piece on the shift knob. It is glued on. There is a screw there. I avoided doing this and just wiggled the assembly apart instead.
  • you cannot just swap out the knobs. The Orrefors knob is held in place by the T15 screw but the factory leather wrapped knob is glued onto the plastic within the assembly. Therefore, you must swap out the boards. The Orrefors is on the left and the factory is on the right

- the Orrefors board will have one connector for the LED light. That must be disconnected and the wire can be electrical taped or tucked into the plastic holding it.
126336

- to swap out the boards, slide out the piece of white plastic from the board. It comes out easy. It has grease on it that you may elect to replenish
126339

126337

  • take the black plastic piece that held the Orrefors shift knob and attach it to the factory PCB board without the LED connector.
  • reassemble the gear shifter assembly and attach the Orrefors knob. Be very careful when sliding the board back into the housing. Pay attention to the location of the 2 green buttons that activate the P (park) button. If you try to quickly jam things back in there, you risk having the rubber pieces on the buttons coming up and not depress the P button properly.

Attach the shifter assembly back into the console

Put everything back together in reverse

Turn on your car and try to shift

Win

PS: will clean up these instructions with more time. I have to gather and organize the photos.

I can confirm here too, you that we as a dealer, have tried to make the swap for an Orrefors Crystal shifter (in an XC40 Momentum), and the system was not compatible. Strange yes, but there is no work around.

We tried to make the switch as we actually sold an XC40 to the daughter of a high-up executive who works for Orrefors USA. Sadly, it was not an option.

I attempted to add the led fog lamps to my 2017 XC90 T8. I purchased a set of fog lights and verified that the connectors for the fog lamps were indeed present. However, I found in testing that they were not live. The headlight switch while able to turn on the fog lamp for the rear cannot do so for the front. As I investigated I found that when the car was manufactured that it obviously did not come with fog lamps (that area is used on the passenger side for cooling of the battery system). So I tried going into the software but could not find out how to change from 1 to 0 in the system. So like your situation, once set it is in stone. Though I would think your attempt at change was more benign then mine. Having said that, I still feel these cars are great.

I am nearing the end of our warranty (Jan 2022) and am not looking for a replacement. I had hoped for the new SPA2 platform XC90 all electric, however that now looks like it is being moved out into mid to late 2022. As I have hunted around I find no other plugins that have the utility (size) of the XC90 as a plugin. The X5 is much smaller due to the battery impacting the cargo area. The Audi Q4 is about the same size as the X5. There just does not appear to be any alternative to the XC90 T8. I am thinking about selling our car sometime this year while prices are holding up and perhaps going with a subscription car from Volvo. However, they don't seem to offer the T8 only the T6.

@carpe_diemas on Instagram successfully swapped to the crystal shifter in his V60 Polestar. Not sure how, but might be worth reaching out to see what he did.
Thanks! I just hit him/her up. Hopefully I'll get an answer

Is there a way to transfer the guts from the factory shifter into the crystal one?
I did think about that. However the shift knob itself does not fit perfectly on the original shift mechanism. I would have to trim it down to fit. It's a half and half solution that I'm strongly considering

I wonder if the reason they don't just swap out is because the crystal is illuminated from the bottom. I'm assuming there's just an LED at the base shining up through the crystal. Is anything illuminated about the Inscription Expression shifter? Maybe that's part of the compatibility issue...? Looks like it's the same shifter from the XC40 loaner I just had.

Alright y'all one last attempt from me before I say, I'm screwed. Since the car software refuses to recognize the new shifter assembly, I thought I'd only swap out the knobs (by disassembling the shifter assemblies). Turns out it is really easy to do that part.
Now comes the not fun part of taking apart the center console again to try it. I wish to sweet baby Jesus that Volvo made this just a little less burdensome.

Good luck!

Any pictures at any state of center console disassembly are always welcome [emoji6]

@MNVolvoDad I am sure you would have already looked through, but I found this old post in XC40 forum where they ran into the exact same issue as you. Someone posted a V60 polestar upgrade (which might be the insta handle posted above) pictures. Take a look and see if it helps!

Thanks for that! I actually did contact that gentleman on Instagram to see what he did exactly. He essentially performed surgery on his V60 Polestar shift knob and utilized a 3D printer to print out a part to make it work. I'm trying to do a knob swap. I know the light won't work in the end but I don't mind.

Good news all. I think the Orrefors swap is actually possible without lighting as long as you have a shift by wire gear shifter. I was able to remove my entire shifter assembly and compare it with the Orrefors assembly yesterday. The only major difference on the PCB board was the Orrefors has an extra power connector for the light. Otherwise, it’s pretty identical. Since my previous attempt to swap out the entire assembly failed because the software rejected it, I swapped out the shift knobs only and left the PCB board alone. The software will not reject anything anymore since the original PCB board is still there.
I will put everything back together tomorrow and test it. I’m 99.9% sure it will work.

Today is the big day for the swap! Here are some early teaser photos for you to see the difference between my default shifter assembly vs the Orrefors. I swapped the Orrefors PCB board with my default board. The the Orrefors board has one extra connector for the LED light, otherwise it's identical. But because of that, the car software won't accept it. This would have been an easier swap if Volvo would allow recognition of the Orrefors board right from the start.

nice work, not just the connector on that PCB, you can see a bunch of components also not on the board to the right of the connector.
Good eye!! Still going at it.
