A bit of a story here but wanted to give as much info as possible to hopefully get some opinions on possible issues. Recently purchased a 2012 Volvo S60 T5 from my brother who happens to be a mechanic. The car had a new timing belt and in great shape with 175,000 miles on it. Ran fine with only issue being a bit of oil consumption - after reviewing the forums this seems to be a common issue with this engine.
Last week my daughter was driving the car and noticed it was running a little rough specifically going up hills and while idling at stop signs. At this point no check engine light or other issues so she kept going. She stopped to fill the gas tank and everything was fine, no smells or smoke and started just fine. A mile down the road the check engine came on so she immediately pulled into a parking lot and a big cloud of very dense black smoke came from the tail pipe and possibly the engine compartment, she was scared the car might be on fire and had other kids in the car so her immediate concern was getting out of the vehicle.
I went to get them and while waiting for the tow truck attempted to start the vehicle, it would just turn over but did not start, when attempting to start it a small amount of black smoke came from the tailpipe and it smelled terrible. Car was towed to my brothers house where he read the codes for a bad O2 sensor. When he attempted to start he got a lot of very thick black smoke but car did not start. Eventually it stopped even turning over.
He replaced the starter, O2 sensor and spark plugs and checked all the major items, now the car starts and the black smoke has been replaced by some white smoke and the engine is not running well. My brother has been for more than 25 years but has limited experience with Volvos so looking for suggestions on what to look at next. If you need more detail let me know and I will ask my brother as he has the car and the knowledge.
