You actually do not need the PCC unless you want feedback that it started. Also I think that I read that the PCC has better range. With the standard remote it is just [lock] followed by the [*] for 3 seconds or so.
For some reason I thought the PCC was something else, now that I looked it up - I already have it! It will give me the feedback of whether the car is locked or unlocked and all that fanciness as well.

It could be argued the way you say, but why wouldnt it work on pre-2013 cars? There must be a hardware difference since there was very little difference between MY. Also Volvo is in business to make money. How many more people would get it if it were just a $100 software update? I would.
heck yeah I would too for a 100 bucks - I'm not sure about the pre2013 cars though, one of the sales guys mentioned to me that you used to have to plug the key fob into the car to start it, is that the case? I have a spot to plug my key in and sometimes I do, but I can also unlock and start the car without ever removing the keyfob from my pocket. The plug in slot is more of a key holster for me, good spot to keep the keys if out of your pocket but rarely gets used by me.

what for?
Looking at my PCC fob I don't see anything that looks like it would activate starting the car. Is it just the unlock button? I really don't know.

You press lock. Then the approach light button for 2 seconds. Is the sequence for starting.
