So I have had my 2018 xc90 r-design for 2.5 months and now there is a crack in the sunroof! I took it to the dealer today and am being told the crack was caused by some type of impact. Hard to believe since we haven't noticed anything while driving and the car otherwise has been in a garage. I'm so frustrated! Has anyone else experienced this? Any advice since the dealer is saying it will not be covered under warranty?

Did they show you the alleged point of impact? Obviously not an expert here, but if something big enough to break the sunroof hit it, there should be a visible dent and spider web, I would think. And that would be true, I think, whether the impact came from above (e.g. a rock) or below (e.g. someone whacking it with that steel pole you bought at Home Depot).

Did you wash the car on a really hot day? That would be my first suspicion. I don't think it would be a slam dunk to have that covered under warranty, but at least you would have a shot. But probably not as good a case as if they can't prove that it was an impact, and in the end no one can prove what caused it.

I don't know about a pattern of this happening, but others here will no doubt know more, so stay tuned.

This is becoming a bigger problem with large panorama type sunroofs being offered in cars. I think there have been a few instances over on the S90/V90 threads.

Land Rover has been doing glass roofs on their rougher offroading vehicles for years and never experienced problems.

This crack may be an isolated incident. If he can't see the point or source of the crack on the roof, then Volvo must prove their claim about something else cracking it

There is a tiny white mark that they are saying is the alleged point of impact. Hard to believe something so small could break the glass. Are they that delicate?
You'll be forced to claim from your vehicle insurance

Plenty of threads on this happening to LR vehicles. The search filled up my screen, lol.

Yeah not going through insurance. $1100 to repair and have a $500 deductible. Not worth potentially raising our rates to save $600!
Just an aside:
If that is your attitude (as it is mine as well), you are wasting money on the low deductible. I always take the highest available deductible. No point in paying for the coverage if you aren't willing to use it.

i leave it and wouldn't even think about it.... when it shatters, then volvo will have to take care of it. had a coworker had his infinity roof collapse. i had a small crack from hail damage on my accord. hairline crack was an eye sore but never leaked. $1100 i would spend getting a clear bra :)

Why will Volvo have to repair if it shatters? I am assuming they would say it is just from the crack that was already there

You're right, that is what they would say.

You are doing the right thing, I think. Better to ask, and try to work this thing through in a civil way, rather than go nuclear. Volvo tends to be pretty reasonable and responsible about most things in my experience. Of course you might not get what you want in the end, but you stand a better chance of negotiating something decent if you don't walk in the door like Yosemite Sam.

Others might differ, but I am a fan of chain-of-command. Parts person, parts manager, dealership manager, then go national through (presumably?) VCNA. If you have a paper/electronic trail to back you up on it, all the better. Try to get people on the record. Plus, take good pictures of your sunroof, including detailed shots of where they claim whatever hit you landed.

I have never had to go through VCNA, but people here seem to find them to be responsive more often than not. I don't have any names, but you could do a search here and probably come up with some.

The best source on this site is GrecianVolvo, if he is monitoring this thread he might have some advice... I would trust his judgment more than mine, btw.

Mine had a crack that had no apparent impact mark nor do I remember any sound of impact while driving. The dealer replaced it under warranty...along with the entire track because a grinding sound while rolling the shade. Good luck OP!

Hi jen531 - Have you checked this article on Volvo sunroofs?

Here is the article talking about the sunroofs and problems with them for recent models and people who got Volvo to honor the replacement under warranty. Not sure if it helps.

It can be - glass, particularly tempered or even GG is under a lot of tension. It's not so much a impact which they are designed to handle, but a surface puncture like from a sharp edge or rock that can lead them to release the tension and crack. If you've ever dropped your phone, if it lands on it's face on concrete it's more likely to shatter than if it lands on a smoother surface. Sorry to hear about your situation. I had a similar one with my Boxster where the windshield shattered under warranty. They inspected it and said the same thing. If there were any signs of impact it wouldn't be covered under warranty. Sure enough, the used a ball point pen to trace the cracks on on one of them found a tiny sand sized pit. It could have been the point of failure and then a subsequent impact even from a pothole could have caused it to shatter.
