Hi all,
Volvo's newest software update saves the customer preference on having START/STOP turned on or off based on how they left it for the previous drive.
It is ONLY for the XC40.
I can confirm that this works, as we performed the newest update to my (wife/s!) personal XC40.

Is this a dealer update or OTA?

Discussed in another thread.

For anyone else reading this...all cars produced now will have this update. If you have already taken delivery of your XC40 or will be doing so in the next couple of weeks, have your service dept download the update if you want start strop to always be on when in ECO mode, or have the choice to turn it off in COMFORT mode (and, of course, it will always be off in DYNAMIC mode).

Great news! Thanks for posting.

I can’t find the thread where Grecian comment was... does thus mean it will be available as an update on all cars, ie the v90 take delivery on soon, or just all xc40s.

I talked to my dealer today and they had no information about an update. They were clueless. Does this have to be done at the dealership?
Tell them to look for product update bulletin 18-010 that was posted internally a few days ago. The software will be available next week.

I brought my XC40 into the dealership this morning for a software update. They looked at me a little sideways when I told them that there was a software update available that I read about on Swedespeed (I just bought the car less than a month ago) but they patiently updated the software and, sure enough, my Stop/Start toggle preference ("OFF") in Comfort driving mode is now saved between key cycles. Switching to ECO driving mode re-activates Stop/Start. Switching back to Comfort mode disables start-stop, consistent with my toggle preference.

With this change my assessment of the XC40 just went from a 9.9 to a 10.0.

Typical...

Yannis,

Anyone ever going to do anything to improve overall dealer experience? They are detrimental to Volvos success!!! No customer should come in with instructions on how to do things...

I've been a first time Volvo (C30) owner for 6 years now and had recently written off this brand if they were going to "start-stop" everything. But if there is a slim chance that the V40 might get this software patch then I'll seriously consider buying another Volvo.

This will be in every vehicle in a few years. It's inevitable. BMW, MB, Lexus, etc - have all gone this route already.

As of right now, the only car that let's you do it is XC40 afaik
Here is an example product that lets you take care of it in a Mercedes:

A less physical way is an OBD Tool or Tuner app to disable it when the dealership isn't allowed to.

I may sound like a study of one but I assure you there are many people who are willing to pay $$$ or completely ditch brands to get rid of Start and Stop.

I'd be happy with an "always present" softswitch to turn it off at start up. My C300 has a wired button that I push as part of the start up sequence....foot on brake, press start button, press start-stop switch, put on seat belt....go

In celebration of Volvo's recent decision to let XC40 owners permanently disable start-stop, here's a Car and Driver article explaining why it is uncommon to be able to turn it off for good:

Our other car is a BMW X3, which we've had for three years, has always allowed us to turn off this feature. We don't have to reset it every time we start up the car. However, one amusing and puzzling thing ... every time we valet parked the car, the start/stop feature would be back on again! How? Well, it's because the off button is right next to the ignition button, so we're pretty sure that valets in a hurry just reach and stab until they get the right button.
