My auto dim mirror died on on my 98 coupe. Have been investigating first replacing it, looks like a new one is 180-220. Have watched several videos of people swapping their glass on newer volvo models. Trouble is finding the glass. On ebay there are few listings for the c70 coupe mirror and costs is about 100 average.
Two questions:
Any ideas if the convertible rear view with the lights will work as a plug and play replacement (without the lights working, with the auto dim working)?
or
Is the convertible rear view or another model's glass the same shape that it would fit in my unit if I just ransfered the glass?
I ask as there is a great supply on ebay of the convertible and various other volvo model, few c70 coupe units.

Many Thanks
Jerome

I can't confirm but I'd bet money that it's the same mirror as in the S70 and V70.

I have a vert mirror in my coupe and it works fine (without the lights of course). Someday I'll wire up the lights to come on with the other dome lights.

I did the glass replacement procedure on the '02 Cross Country I used to own. It was very fiddly work and kind of a pain to do, but it did work. For about 6 months...

Yes, the convertible rear view mirror with work with the compass, but not the lights. The coupe is missing the wiring and connection for the lights. You don't need the lights anyways as the coupe has the overhead lights near the sunroof.
I used one of these mirrors on my coupe for about 6 months until it died/melted/leaked just like the other 3 used ones did I bought from ebay.

Cheapest solution is buying used from ebay, or volvo & saab dismantlers in Rancho Cordova, or lkqonline.com. LKQ has been the most reliable for me so far. I wouldn't waste time playing the glass replacement game.

If you really want a long term repair, you can send the mirror to Magna Donnelly's authorized warranty repair facility, Sybesma's Electronics.

Many thanks for all of the replies, I have been slow in addressing this issue. The mirror, fingers crossed, has not leaked and just has the weird cloud in in it which has some what stabilized in shape to cover 85% of the mirror. For me it seems like the Sybesma's $108 repair is the best value. This one has lasted almost 20 years so hopefully the repaired version will buy me another 10 at least!
Called and talked with them, they said they can only fix mirrors manufactured by Magna Donnelly and Gentex, are we certain all the C70 mirrors are from the manufactures?

If you have an OEM volvo mirror from a MY 98 C70 it was made by Donnelley. Check the back of you mirror, the manufacturer is on it.

I have a '08 V70 that I replaced the glass on about 18 months ago. The original mirror had dark streaks in it and I wanted to replace it. My mirror is self-dimming, has a camera that watches for rain on the windshield and it has a compass, too...so a new one would be expensive. I bought a used one that was identical on ebay for $80, removed the glass and soldered the leads to the old mirror and put it back together. It worked perfectly but now that glass is getting dark streaks, too.
I'm betting that the glass from any Gentex self dimming mirror will fit the mirror housing on my V70 so I bid on a brand new Gentex 126 and got it for $8.50. It doesn't have the compass or the rain sensing electronics but I'm betting the mirror glass is the same shape and will fit. I'll remove the glass and install it and I'll let you know how it works out. I expect the rain sensing will still work as will the self-dim but I'll lose the compass (which I don't use anyway).

I've bought several Gentex self-dim mirrors and added them to cars that didn't come with a self-dimming mirror and they always work. If the car wasn't pre-wired for it you can always get electricity by running a wire down the A-pillar and to the fusebox. The hardest part is to match the mirror with the metal mount glued to the windshield. They vary in size and shape.

I have access to my old C70 coupe which had it. If you still need one I can try and get it for you. PM me

LOVE my Volvos, but the mirrors make no sense. How is it that they all die? My 07 has the dark streaks too, and in P2 world they are keyed to the car so you'll throw codes if you replace with another. Getting glass replaced is the best (cheapest) option.

After I had two die in my old C and one in my new. I just replaced it with a normal non-auto dimming mirror used from the bay for like $10. Auto dimming never dimmed anyway since I have tinted windows. Never looked back. LOL
