Just got a new 2016 XC70 T5 - we have a 2012 T6 also - iphone audio streaming works great on 2012 - no problems at all

But on the 2016 the stream drops out sporadically and randomly - it's like a skipping sound, or glitch noise - kind of like it's buffering for a second every now and then (generally once or twice a song, often more, sometimes less).

By the way, no dropouts when phone connected by AUX cable or USB to the car stereo.

I am bringing the car next week into the dealer to look into this odd problem - any ideas what is going on? I thought it might be the phone but no problems with the 2012.

I don't notice dropouts while on the phone, but might not be talking long enough.

Anyone else notice this problem?

Thanks

I have this same problem, intermittently, on a 2014 S60. Dealer says nothing shows up on diagnostics.

Are you streaming from audio on the iPhone, or across a data connection?

I don't know what you mean by across a data connection - what would that be?

Streaming from an iphone 6 - using the music app (like ipod), also Jukebox, dropbox and DS Audio - experience same dropout problem with each source used - also youtube music on safari drops out intermittlently

No problem with any music streaming using any of these apps on the 2012 car.

Does your car have the same problem with another phone/source?

The phenomenon happens mostly at least once or twice every three minutes like mine? - perhaps dealer needs to spend more time on the diagnostic.

By data connection, I meant streaming Pandora, for example, using your phone's data plan. I regularly stream music on my daily commute. I rarely listen to the radio local stations.

My question was an attempt to isolate the problem: if the music you are listening to is on your iPhone locally, and you're getting the problem, I would point to the Bluetooth link. If you were streaming to music from the Internet, it could be your data rate dropped a bit, sure to environment (tall buildings, overloaded cell tower, etc.).

Do other phones connected to your cars' Bluetooth experience the problem?

Does it happen when you use the Aux port?

Psychwarlord, I just picked up my 2016 XC70 last Saturday and have the same issue with Bluetooth Music with iPhone 5SE. Please keep us updated on what your dealer says. I've been planning on taking mine back too to see what the issue is as well. Also, like you, no issues with phone or when directly wired.

i got the same problem with my 2013 xc70 after i got android update on my sony z3+ to 6.0.1. before it was spotless but after update it almost at is lagging in the transfer.

i see online that several people have complained on similuar issue after updated. maybe your iphone was updated ?

I have a '13 XC70 using an LG G3 phone and have experienced no Bluetooth streaming issues with either the old Android 5.? or the new 6.0. You might want to try another phone to see if you have the same issue. I have known of some phones having issues with Bluetooth. But I do have an interesting radio issue. Every so often it has an echo. Fortunately, I rarely use the radio. Mostly use a USB stick with my own tracks.

My phone was updated a few months ago, but it works fine on the 2012 XC70 and worked fine on my 2015 Subaru Forester - I might take the phone to the dealer and see how it works on the cars on the lot when I take in the car on Thursday

Also, I had the phone "forget the device", changed the name of the phone, paired the phone with the car again and no change - still intermittent random dropouts

Thanks for your thoughts on this....

I took it to the dealer and they told me it needed two software updates.

The 2016 Volvo Bluetooth system is very different from the 2012 xc70, they say.

Their technician drove it with my phone for 20 minutes with no problem, they said.

When I have the time I will listen for 20 minutes and find out for myself.

Dealer said it needed two software updates, did it, but no change - still drops out as much as ever.

I played my phone on another 2016 xc70 on the lot and it was just fine, no problems.

Very perplexing...

My wife's iPhone 6 dropped out playing a YouTube song. I drove around today using my iPhone 6!and it dropped out a lot at first and then it would not drop out at all for the rest of the trip.

It appears to be very random. I spoke to the service manager about it and he said

Bluetooth is not very sticky

Which sums it up I guess

Well, it's the iPhone 6 that is the culprit with the 2016 xc70.

I drove for over an hour today - iPhone 6 music dropped out continuously

My daughter's iPad Air played for 45 minutes straight perfectly with no dropouts at all.

Bluetooth nomenclature on phone starts with 78 - iPad Air starts with 80

Perhaps iPhone 6 Bluetooth needs updating?

Think I fixed the problem with iPhone 6

I googled iPhone car Bluetooth problems

A recommendation was

Select settings

Select general

Select reset

Select reset all settings

I played the first song, heard one dropout, then no more for the rest of the day.

I will have to test this some more, but it seems to be working flawlessly now

Spoke too soon - dropping out madly today

I guess will just have to live with it - maybe an iPhone 6s will do the trick when the time comes to upgrade...

I noticed the same thing on two different 2017 loaner cars (V60 and S60) in the past month. Drove me nuts. Not a good sign that they still haven't fixed the issue. My iPhone SE streams perfectly on our 2013 XC90. (iOS 10.3.2)

It's especially problematic when the dropout happens when Waze is trying to give me directions.

I have exactly the same issue on my 2016 S60 and iPhone 6. I got my car in Jan 2016 and did not experience this glitch for a year, not even once. It has only started occurring after the first scheduled service in Jan 2017. But there's more to it…

If I'm having a call through the hands-free and any of the parking sensors alarm, the other party in the call will immediately start hearing back his/her own voice as an echo. Happens every single time. An SMS notification during a call does not trigger echoing. I can't recall having this issue either prior to service.

Next, I will get another phone (some Android) to see if I'm able to reproduce the issue with it, as streaming from my iPhone to any other Bluetooth device works perfectly.

I am having the same issue in our recently purchased 2015.5 - I thought it was because my battery was low on the test drive... only to find out it does it when fully charged.

My quest for answers continues… I have now tested with both an iOS device and an Android device, and the glitch is definitely there with both phones. It is not a device related but undeniably an issue with the car's Bluetooth implementation. So, I went to see my dealer and indeed, he confirmed that there is a Volvo internal bulletin about Bluetooth audio streaming sporadically dropping! Volvo suggest resolving the issue either by reseting the device or temporarily switching to a different audio source and back (e.g. from Bluetooth to radio and then back) and nothing else. There is no fix and even worse, there is none in the planning either. I.e. Volvo does not intend to fix this issue – unless they will get enough customer complaints.

I was not satisfied with Volvo's efforts so started debugging even more. And it turns out that Bluetooth dropping only happens if I'm using my car's WiFi hotspot at the same time. Immediately after I disable WiFi on my phone (or simply do not let it use my car's WiFi) the Bluetooth stream works perfectly. I assume Volvo is using a single integrated chip for both Bluetooth and WiFi, so apparently it is a hardware or firmware issue. I wonder if this is the case for you guys, too?
