2011 XC90 Nav--convert from Europe to US?
Just moved back from Germany after 3 years where XC90 was delivered new with US configuration but Europe nav (maps?). Now I need nav to use in US. Dealership said that they have to "shock" the system AND install maps so that the nav will find the satellite? I don't understand what that means, and am not looking forward to $600-$700 fee. Is there a way around this? I've read all of these posts, but you all seem to know more about the car than I do. Can you step back and tell me what I need to do from the beginning? Thanks. (Posted in Tech forum, but they said to post here, too)

That's great news!
Indeed. Even I was not aware of this policy change. Must be because the technology in the new XC90 enables for having a larger amount of data transferred and stored in the car.

Hi t2leary, Did you ever get a response here? I recently bought a used C30 that was a Military Car. The car is now in Southern California yet it thinks its in Denmark. I bought the newest 2014 USA DVD Map Upgrade, installed the DVD and it said the disc was invalid and wanted disc 1. Not sure why it can't find me and I have no idea what disc 1 is. Wondering if I'll need the dealer to reset my system as well and then it will read this new DVD I bought. Wondering what this may cost if I need to do it. Any help is appreciated. Thanks

The bottom of the current XC90 T8 OSD price list 116 has option A00522 EU- Map for navigation system and a footnote: "There is no additional cost upon return to US since all maps are available for free on internet"
I can confirm this works. I'm on my OSD trip now (in Norway) and the navigation is working very well. I had emailed Volvo delivery center in Gothenberg about a week before my arrival to request the European maps be loaded. They loaded them before our arrival -- no charge They also confirmed that U.S. Maps would be loaded when my cars arrives back in the U.S. (For free).

True as above. However I also used my Copilot at the same time, as it gives me camera radar warning at 500 meters (or 1000 meters ) rather do a ping in front of the camera the XC 90 navigation does- if you are are interested in such.

Note that in some countries it is illegal to use a device (GPS) that indicates where speed cameras are. And likewise some countries it is illegal to use radar / laser detectors.

As mentioned on this thread and probably on others, you can upload European maps onto your Sensus navigation via a USB drive. It's 33.3 GB and supposedly takes about an hour to install.

My questions is, by installing the European maps, does that override the North American maps that were installed at the Factory? So when the car arrives in the US, do you then need to reinstall the North American maps? I know some dealers are willing to do the installation for their customers, but I guess not every dealer is doing it.

I did an OSD in August of last year. My XC90 had the European maps loaded - I did not have to pre-ask them to do this. When the car arrived in the states, they loaded the US maps. I believe they did this at the Port at their operations center when the car arrived in the US and not at the dealership.

I did an OSD is September 2015. I asked ahead of time about having Europe maps on the GPS and they assured me they'd be loaded on the car when we picked it up in Gothenburg, and then replaced with US maps when we picked it up from our home dealership. Everything went exactly as they said it would.

Yup same for our recent OSD trip. Euro maps installed on XC90 at factory. When we returned car to FDC, Hans assured us that US maps would be installed before it shipped to the US.

XC-90 OSD European vs. North American

When we pick up our car in Sweden we had all European maps. The arrived in American with the European maps still installed. We asked the dealer to reinstall North America since that was on our invoice and bill of sale. They refused and demanded that we pay $130 to switch the maps. I reached out to Volvo USA and they explained how to download for free onto a USB and upload the map myself. The map is currently downloading to my computer right now - taking about 3 and a half hours. Keep your finger crossed that is loads and replaces the European maps. Very frustrating after paying $58K for a car and I am having to do the technical modifications!
